Yes, these have gotten more expensive over the years, but they have gotten more capable over the years as well. Plus, in the name of security, YubiKeys are not firmware upgradeable. Whatever features/capabilities your key supported when you bought it is all it will ever support. The only way to upgrade is to buy new ones.

With the holiday sale, the PayPal discount, and the above promo code I don't think anyone will be finding these for a cheaper price anytime soon.

However, do your due diligence and research. Yubico has an entire section of their web site devoted to what services and apps these will work with. They are fabulous with password managers and two-factor authentication. Windows Hello support is noticeably missing.

I've been toying around with the idea of getting a couple of these to play with for years. My back of the cocktail napkin math puts these at about $30/each for me after taxes when buying a pair. I grabbed a couple of the USB 5C NFC and we'll see where this takes me.

FYI, this is not the Yubikey 5 like this post. It is FIDO-only protocol, where as the 5 supports Multiple protocols.

Free shipping: US/CA orders of $100+

It's been 3 years since the last sale, but they've almost doubled in price. Thought the and here meant a pair.

This useless as none of the financial institutions support any security keys (except BoFA). Those are the places you need extra security and that is wide open.
I would argue securing your password manager, social media accounts, email account etc. probably makes it worth it.

What happens if you lose your YubiKey which is associated with your email or other accounts? Is back up key required?

Yes. You always need to have (at least) two connected to each account in case you lose one.

Yeah, if you set up your accounts with one of these without a backup and you lose it, then good luck to you. Your new full-time job for the next few weeks will be having long conversations with tech support departments proving your identity and that you are who you say you are.
