I'm not trying to defend CVS but just curious, what was the picture that you used from? Was it heavily cropped? What was the image taken at full resolution and the file size? This is 16x20 I'm not saying your file is crap but garbage in = garbage out, if the pic was heavily compressed to decrease the file size, taken at low resolution, out of focus, bad lighting, etc...

I did massive posters before... The largest size 72" I think and came out amazing, but I used high def files 4k.

FWIW, "high def" and "4K" are video standards that don't mean much in the world of still photography. A 4K screen is 3840 x 2160 pixels which is only about 8 megapixels. Any modern dedicated camera is at least 20mp and some at 45mp or more.

Still, I've been pretty comfortable printing photos at 100ppi, so a "4K" photo could be printed up to 38" x 21". A 72" print would need 7200 pixels on the long side, or roughly 35 megapixels total. I'm curious what was the resolution of the image for your 72" poster, and how it looks up close.
