HBO Max Basic with Ads is showing a Black Friday promo that drops the monthly price to $2.99 for 12 months, often through the app, browser, or third party billing flows like Apple, Amazon, Roku, or Google Play. The strongest draw is the low price for existing, lapsed, and even some new accounts, with many setups carrying over to other devices after signup. The main tradeoff is the ad load, which can be frequent and sometimes front loaded, and the plan does not include live sports or 4K. A practical budget pick if you can live with ads and device specific setup quirks.
Common Questions (7)
It works on some devices and not others: many users saw it on iPhone/iPad/Apple TV and some Fire/Roku devices, while Android and PC often showed only the regular $10.99 price. The offer appears to be tied to the billing path on the device you use, so checking multiple devices can matter.
The ad load can be heavy, with about 3-4 ad breaks per episode and some shows front-loading several minutes of ads before the content starts. Older titles may have no ads at all, but many users report the ads are more intrusive than Prime Video and less intrusive than Hulu.
Yes. The promo has been available to existing subscribers, lapsed accounts, and even annual-plan users, with the switch often taking effect after the current billing cycle ends. Some accounts show the $2.99 rate only after clicking Change Plan or Renew Subscription.
The offer is reported as $2.99 per month for 12 months, with the discounted rate starting after any current plan ends. After the promo period, it reverts to the then-current price unless another offer is selected.
No live sports are included on the ads plan, and the standard ad-supported tier is 1080p/HD rather than 4K. Premium is needed for 4K, and some sports like TNT/TBS/TruTV basketball games require Standard or Premium.
Look under Renew subscription, Change Your Plan, or Alternative Billing; on some accounts it only appears after logging in and clicking the app's subscription flow. It can also show directly on the HBO Max site or in browser-based account pages, but many users only saw it after opening the app or a device-specific billing path.
Upgrading may be limited or unavailable on this promo, and some users saw messages saying they were unable to change plans. A few accounts could switch plans later, but the promo itself is mainly reported as a monthly ad-supported offer rather than a flexible upgrade path.

Then I downloaded the HBO Max app on Iphone and used the "alternative billing" that only appears in on the app there. Apparently you gotta subscribe through Apple.
Just a note, it won't qualify for the amex entertainment credit since it has to be subscribed from the website.
