HBO Max Basic with Ads is showing a Black Friday promo that drops the monthly price to $2.99 for 12 months, often through the app, browser, or third party billing flows like Apple, Amazon, Roku, or Google Play. The strongest draw is the low price for existing, lapsed, and even some new accounts, with many setups carrying over to other devices after signup. The main tradeoff is the ad load, which can be frequent and sometimes front loaded, and the plan does not include live sports or 4K. A practical budget pick if you can live with ads and device specific setup quirks.
The alternative billing option can show a $2.99 per month ads tier for 12 months.
The ads tier can be accessed through Apple Pay and Apple-managed subscriptions on iOS devices.
The deal can work after a lapsed period when the offer appears in the HBO Max app.
The Basic with Ads plan can stream in HD for some viewing setups.
The alternative billing option is not visible for all accounts and appears targeted to certain eligibility conditions.
Basic with Ads can include frequent ad breaks that interrupt episodes and movies.
The $2.99 price can fail during checkout and show $10.99 on the billing screen instead.
The ads tier does not include live sports, which limits what you can watch.

On my phone browser, I cancelled my active $4.99 plan and clicked "Change Your Plan" to try and subscribe to the $2.99 one, but it wasn't showing up. I tried the Android HBO Max app, and it also wasn't showing it. I opened my HBO Max app on my Fire Stick, and nope, also not there.
I went back on my phone browser, Subscriptions>"Change Your Plan", and it magically showed up. So now the $2.99 plan will activate at the end of my current $4.99 plan cycle. I have no idea what exactly triggered it to appear, but hopefully this helps.
edit: they might have just enabled it on desktop/phone browser because comments before mine are showing success on those.
