The WH-1000XM5 stands out for strong noise canceling and very good sound in a lightweight, soft-cushioned design. The cabin noise test is dramatic, and the headphones feel light on the head. Comfort is less consistent because the cups are shallow and the thinner band can cause pain during longer sessions. The hinge design is the biggest concern, with repeated breakage and warranty headaches reported. On Windows PCs, handsfree telephony may need to be disabled to avoid terrible audio, making this a capable but fragile-feeling pick.
jet travelers who want strong noise canceling because the noise cancelling was described as excellent on a jet, making cabin noise much less noticeable.
people who prioritize lightweight comfort for everyday listening because one commenter said they're the lightest headphones they've owned and the ear cushions are very soft.
buyers who already know they prefer an over-ear fit because one commenter said XM4s fit over their ears better than XM5s after trying both (so this deal is best for people who don't have that fit issue).
buyers who are worried about hinge durability because multiple commenters warned the XM5 hinge design is prone to breaking regardless of new/used/remanufactured condition, and that it's "not a matter of if" but "when."
people who plan to use them for long sessions because the thinner/shallow cup design was reported to cause frequent adjusting and even piercing pain after a few hours for one commenter, who returned them.
Windows PC users who want reliable mic/audio over Bluetooth without extra settings because one commenter said you have to disable handsfree telephony or the audio sounds like "complete trash."
buyers purchasing from eBay or non-official channels who rely on warranty coverage because one commenter claimed Sony limits warranty access to official retailers and may deny warranty for an eBay sale.
people who want a set-and-forget headset for gym/sweat-heavy use because commenters cited moisture/sweat-related crackling/thud issues on earlier models and warned that build/hinge problems can still happen even with light usage.
They can feel less comfortable than the XM4 because the cups are shallow and the headband is thin, which can cause frequent adjusting or even piercing pain after a few hours. The ear cushions are very soft and the headphones are very light, but the fit may still be better on the XM4 for some ears.
Yes. The hinge design is repeatedly reported as a weak point and can crack or break even with light use, including on new, used, or remanufactured units. Some buyers have gone through multiple pairs, so the main risk with this model is long-term durability rather than sound quality.
If hinge durability matters most, waiting for the XM6 is the safer Sony choice because the XM5 hinge is the recurring complaint. The XM4 is also suggested as a better comfort tradeoff if you want to save money and can accept slightly weaker noise canceling.
Yes, the noise canceling is strong enough to make a jet cabin feel dramatically quieter when you take them off. The ANC is clearly noticeable, though one comparison says the jump over a cheap $30 pair is not huge.
They can sound very bad on Windows unless handsfree telephony is disabled. Turning that setting off is the practical fix for getting normal audio quality on a PC.
Sony XM headphones are incredible but I honestly would NOT recommend getting anything up to (and including) the XM5's due to the hinge.
I've owned the original XM, XM2's, and XM4's - both XM and XM2's plastic hinge part suddenly completely cracked and broke apart. The XM4 I bought had a crackling/thud noise issue if wearing for longer periods of time and having some moisture/sweat build up around the ears (issue was due to the new build design vs old ones) so I ended up returning those.
I've done a lot of research on the XM5 and people recommend not getting it due to the poor build quality of the hinges and a few other things (even with light usage, it can still just completely break). The reviews you see online will never mention these things cause those reviewers only use the headphones to make the review video lol.
IMO either get the XM6's (prob wait for a sale) if you want to stick with Sony or the Bose QuietComfort headphones. I have a friend who has the Bose QC Ultra's + NC700 and he wears them for long periods of time, uses them at the gym, etc and has NEVER had an issue in the years he's owned them.
Used XM4s for 4 years before grabbing these open-box. Everything is excellent except the thinner band causes piercing pain after a few hours. I honestly thought I was having migraines. Back to my XM4s until I see a decent deal on XM6.
I like my xm3s for the same reason over xm5. I just like the stop play function when removing headphones for home use.
Have these, like them. If using on a pc with windows you have to disable the handsfree telephony otherwise they sound like complete trash. The ANC is a noticeable but not immense difference from the TAGRY $30 headphones on Amazon imo.
