This APC BN1050M is a compact 8 outlet UPS best suited for short outages, router and modem backup, or a small office setup that needs fast switchover and USB shutdown support. The 600 watt output and stepped approximation to a sinewave are the key limits, so it is not a fit for high draw PCs or long runtime needs. The beep can be muted, though the fan and lead acid battery aging remain common complaints. A practical pick if the load stays modest and the USB shutdown feature matters.

  • Home server owners who need automatic shutdown, because the USB port can trigger a server shutdown when battery charge gets low.

  • Router-and-modem setups that need hours of backup, because this size can keep low-power networking gear running longer than smaller units.

  • Office desks with several plugged-in devices, because the eight outlets and fast switchover suit a compact workstation.

  • People protecting a PC and peripherals during brief outages, because the battery can cover a few minutes while you shut down safely.

  • Buyers who want a low-maintenance backup unit, because lead-acid batteries typically need replacement every 2 to 3 years.

  • People who want silent backup power, because the fan can get noisy and the alarm beeping can be hard to ignore.

  • Gaming PCs or high-wattage desktops, because the 600W output is below an 850W power supply's peak demand.

  • Users expecting long-term reliability without replacement, because traditional UPS units can eventually stop working even after new batteries.

What's the best option for just a router? This seems like overkill

Depends on how much uptime you are looking for and if anything else on that circuit. If close by, it's a good idea to add the modem as well to a UPS. Even though this may be excess, the 600 / 650 VA's go on sale for about $40. (300 / 350's are just a little less when on promo.) I would NOT spend more than that on one. Watch the BF ads for it.

My only problem with these is that portable power stations are getting so much cheaper so much faster that I'm not sure I have much need for these anymore. In the past they were important for your electronics but at $100-150 I can't help my think most things can be done with a power station that's maybe a little more but with a UPS feature. In exchange I can power more things and I can power them for much longer.

There's a market for this, especially if you need something that's guaranteed under 10ms switchover time, you're shopping for an office, or you're so limited in spacing that 8 outlets on this machine is necessary over a 14amp surge protector in a PPS. But I'm struggling for a use case at this price point, very first world problem.
Yep. I have and/or had over a dozen traditional UPSs of various sizes and brands (APC, CyberPower, Belkin, etc.). Eventually they stop working, even with brand new batteries installed. I'm planning to start buying Lifepo4 power stations as replacements. I'm considering a BLUETTI Elite 30 V2 as my next main computer system UPS, especially if there is a good sale. It's not a gaming computer, so the Elite 30 has plenty of power for my computer system and everything else on and around my desk (but not the laser printer, obviously). And later I'll get larger and smaller ones to replace my various other UPS's as needed.

Depends on how many hours you want the router to run. In my case, we rarely have outages longer than a few minutes, so smaller is adequate for a router and a couple other low power devices (security cameras, etc.). If you need several hours or more, this might be better for you. These general purpose consumer UPSs are not really made for long power outages in general.

The BEEPING.

My wife insists I turn them off if there's a power outage. The beeping drives anyone crazy. Defeats the purpose.

I mean, the computer being on when everything else shuts off would let you know, wouldn't it?

That's why there's a mute button. Or is there not a mute button on this model?

I googled just now. The manual for this model (BN1050M) indicates it does have a mute button.

The lead battery typically lasts 2-3yrs, later on buy a lithium equivalent from amazon to replace the sla battery in there, it will last many years. But use the sla battery for now because over time these equivelant lithium batteries will mature.

my UPS uses 2 and its on its third set of batteries which are now lithium and seem to work fine, the only issue is the charging voltage from the ups is not quite as high as the batteries want so I might be in thw 70-80% charged range which is perfectly fine.
