It's a good entry level handheld, and a good value at $320 new. I sold my Deck LCD for a Deck OLED when they came out, and my handheld family is slowly multiplying with an ROG Ally Z1E and oncoming Konkr Pocket Fit. It's an addictive hobby.

If you get the Deck LCD, just be aware that the 256GB SSD really needs replaced if you're installing any modern games. 256GB can be completely used up with an installation of something like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Baldur's Gate 3. 100GB+ installations are really common for AAA games now, so make sure to check the storage requirements for games you intend on playing since that SSD is quite small. Fortunately, the upgrade process is very easy, and larger 512GB / 1TB / 2TB 2230 SSDs are readily available, but be aware that the upgrade process takes a little bit of technical know-how, with plenty of guides online for the process. Alternatively, you can expand storage with a quality MicroSD card, although this is quite a bit slower than storage on the NVMe, particularly when applying big patches to games. I recommend Samsung's MicroSD cards for reliability purposes. Avoid TeamGroup like the plague. SanDisk is a good alternative.

If you don't need the space, the Steam Deck is a great emulation platform. EmuDeck makes it easy to get going, and 256GB is plenty of space for emulation, or simpler games.

If you're debating getting it, carefully consider your finances.

Is there something you need more for life?
Do you travel often enough where the portability would be useful?
Are there other hobbies you're interested in trying?

$300 could get you:
A Bambu Lab 3D printer.
A good set of Ryobi tools.
A top of the line e-reader.
All kinds of beefy campaign board games, like Gloomhaven etc.

It'll be this price again. There's no reason to "just do it" if you're conflicted.

Because it's $230 cheaper which is more than 40% less than the cheapest OLED model.

I've owned the LCD and OLED Decks and couldn't recommend them more. Personally very happy I got the OLED but I still loved my LCD

Great buy. Pop a 2TB 2230 nvme in it and you're set. I've been running my OG first release LCD Steam Deck as a mobile/home office since release. 3 screens at home, usb-c on the go. Its one of the most capable machines out there.

At this price point, I'm tempted to get one for homelab use.

I dont understand why gaming devices even have a 256gb option at this point? Regardless though, Steam Deck rules, get one if you dont have one and upgrade the storage or get an external storage.

I keep thinking about getting a Steam Deck but I can't justify it because I know that I won't play enough to spend this kind of money. I have a switch and I don't even play enough on it except the weekends.

Deck 2 will come out if I buy now…
Also consider that Deck 2 will probably come out at a much higher price when it eventually releases. Valve has already demonstrated with the steam machine that they don't want to absorb the cost of production anymore. If they're going to be price competitive with the next generation of portable pc handhelds, they might price it around $800-$1000.

Why would you buy this instead of oled....
OLED PWM induced migraines. The extra battery life on the OLED would've been nice but pointless for me considering it will likely give me a headache after 10-15 minutes of staring at the screen.

Also, $320 for this + $130 2TB SSD (Crucial P310) still ends up cheaper than the 512GB OLED.

Shame the OLED never goes on sale.
OLED refurbs do though. Mine was brand new. There is a discord notifier to help.

There's no a deck 2 coming anytime soon. Valve's new hardware focus is on the Steam Machine, VR and the controller for early next year.
Literally word for word they said " we're not talking about the deck 2 yet." 90% of you missed the first 5 minutes apparently

The Legion Go S w/ Z2 Go isn't $200 more, you're thinking of the Z1E model at $650 new or $530 open box. The Z2Go is about $100 more, and it's worth it. Basically everything is better than the Steam Deck, aside from the touchpads which I have no use for on a non-kbm platform and don't need since it doesn't run Windows. My next comment has all the details.

Yeah, the real question is why anyone would buy the steam deck OLED at this moment when the Legion Go S Z1E with SteamOS is on sale for $90 more, or potentially cheaper open box. I know it doesn't have an OLED screen, but it's the best looking IPS display I've ever seen, has VRR, 32 GB RAM, and most importantly, the option to increase the TDP and get much higher framerates.
