When talking about watches, "auto" (automatic) refers to a watch that's powered by a wind-up spring. The spring can be wound up manually using the small stem (typically at the 3 o'clock position), or automatically by a pendulum that swings when the watch is moved, either by the wearer's wrist or a device that moves the watch.
A quartz watch uses a quartz crystal that vibrates when power (from a battery cell or a solar cell) is applied to it. A quartz watch is much more accurate than an automatic watch, but watch "purists" usually look down on quartz watches because they're not as complicated as an auto watch. Similar to audio purists looking down on CD players and prefer the old phonographs and turntables, even with their crackles, pops and scratches.
