This Straight Talk iPhone 13 deal stands out as a low-cost way to get an older but still capable iPhone with a SIM card slot, strong cameras, MagSafe, and solid battery life. The A15 chip keeps it close to the iPhone 14 and not far behind the iPhone 15 for everyday use, and the size and 0.5x lens make it appealing for travel or filming. The main drawback is age, since iOS support is shorter and newer updates can slow it down or drain battery. Unlocking also takes patience, with reports of 60 day service requirements and occasional rebranding or activation hassles.

  • Buyers wanting a temporary phone that can be unlocked later, because Straight Talk service can unlock it after about 60 days.

  • People who still need a physical SIM slot, because this model is the last U.S. iPhone with one and makes carrier swaps easier.

  • Parents buying a simple hand-me-down phone for kids, because it has the same processor as the iPhone 14 and is described as a great kids' phone.

  • Creators filming on a budget, because the extra camera lens includes a 0.5x option that helps with vlogging.

  • Shoppers who want a guaranteed instant unlock, because iPhone unlocks can take extra days, need support tickets, or fail to update right away.

  • People who want long software support, because this phone is already considered old and may only have a few years of updates left.

  • Heavy multitaskers who keep the newest iOS features enabled, because the latest software can slow this phone down and hurt battery life.

Also is this a better deal than Total Wireless $99 for iPhone 14 with 3 months of service?

Does TW unlock after 3 months?

Total Wireless should unlock after 60 days, you just have to decide of a 14 is worth $265 + tax. I'd personally say no, at that point I'd get the 15 or 15 plus from Walmart for $300 if you dont mind either 1. tinkering to unlock it instantly, or 2. paying for 2 months of ATT service. If not that, I think this 13 deal is still better than 14, I've heard you can use a $20 tracfone plan on this to unlock it.

Technically this is $230 (150 +35x2xTax) so $35 difference.

Total's $40 already includes taxes and fees. Straight Talk's $35 doesn't. It's pretty much the same price.
Ah, got it. Thanks for the heads up!

I need some help/advice. I currently have a grandfathered plan with cricket for a great price and an iPhone XR.

I don't need the latest iPhone, but I do insist on buying new after getting burned on a used/refurbished phone. I generally upgrade every 2-3 years to stay ahead of obsolescence.

Since I have an xr, I decided I would try to upgrade this year, but I think I was a bit late to the game this holiday season and missed some of the best deals. I've been happy with my cricket plan, but they are absolute crap when it comes to offering phone upgrades to their current customers. It's rare that they offer existing customers deals on iPhones without adding a new line/number. It's just me, so no one else in household to add, and I've spent years cultivating and protecting my phone number to reduce spam/wrong number calls. I REALLY want to keep my number.

So, I eventually found this deal and decided that it was the best deal for me. 1. Because it wasn't sold out. 2. It was a relatively fair price and 3. It seemed like the least hassle since they only require 2 months of service before they will unlock it. The other iPhone deal threads sounded like too much opportunity for something to go wrong and I'm stuck paying for a phone I can't unlock. I dont know what eSIM swapping is, but I sounds like too much could go wrong. Other offers for prepaid phones with total or att or others had too much conflicting information about the carrier's policies on unlocking. I was able to chat with straight talk and confirmed that after 2 months of the $45 service, they would unlock the phone.

So, here I am. My phone was finally just delivered from Walmart after a 3 day "delay" and as I'm about to open the package, I realize that I hadn't considered how complicated things would be if I wanted to keep my phone number. Am I overthinking this?

Do I just sign up with straight talk for 2 months with a new phone and new number, wait 2 months, call straight talk to unlock, cancel straight talk, and then call cricket to tell them I have a new phone?

Please be gentle with responses. Yes, I know google exists, but there were too many specifics for me to figure out how to find an answer. Thanks in advance!

1. You can either sign up with straight talk or tracfone (needs rebrand but cheaper) for 2 months with a new phone & new number.

2. You don't need to call straight talk to cancel or unlock, it will automatically cancel and unlock for you after 60 days.

3. Yes, you will need to call cricket to swap your new phone and keep your number & grandfathered plan.

YES, I have done a similar deal with Total Wireless (same family with Straight Talk/Tracfone) back in August, my new iPhone 13 unlocked automatically after 60 days in service with TW.

Please clarify for a phone simpleton here:

1. Buy the phone.
2. Buy 2 months of prepaid ST $35 plan
3. Be able to unlock 100% after 2 months without any hassle?

That's how it works?

If anyone didn't know this. After you activate your phone, you can add this plan and it count as a month. It also worked on plans that said you needed 2 months of silver, etc.

When I put either number they both give an error message saying make sure they are active. Both active for 4 days on bronze

Keep Cricket exactly as-is on your XR, run Straight Talk as a temporary extra line on the 13 for ~2 months, let it unlock, then move your Cricket line onto the now-unlocked 13.

Same processor as the iPhone 14. These make great phones for kids.
