The WD Red Plus 10TB is a NAS drive that lands around $16 to $17 per terabyte, which makes it feel reasonable for a reputable midrange model. It is being compared with larger Red Pro options and 12TB Red Plus drives, but the 10TB stands out as the simpler capacity choice for a basic NAS or NVR upgrade. The drive is air filled, while only the WD120EFBX 12TB Red Plus is helium filled. Shipping and stock are the main friction points, with Amazon often slow and some alternate listings already out of stock.

  • The drive can work out around $16 to $17 per terabyte, which keeps the cost reasonable for a WD Red NAS option.

  • WD's own store can offer the same price with free shipping, which can reduce total checkout cost versus other retailers.

  • B&H checkout can stack PayPal cash back offers, which can lower the effective cost for a multi-drive NAS build.

  • The WD Red Plus line uses air-filled construction for this 10TB model, which avoids helium-variant confusion when matching part numbers.

  • The 10% off coupon may not apply to already-discounted prices and can even increase the final price.

  • Shipping timelines can be a drawback because Amazon orders may show 3+ weeks of delivery time.

  • The 10TB WD Red Plus model may be avoided due to concerns about loud operation, even though closet placement could reduce impact.

  • WD orders using PayPal cash back can get stuck at an "order confirmed" status for more than a week.

I had not been following HDD prices since the data center building boom. Are they similar to the jump in memory prices?
Yes. AI datacenters are using up the available hard drive supply. Smaller capacity drive production lines will be (or are being) converted to larger capacity drive production only. SSDs and GPUs are going to be next, probably after Christmas once the current supplies are sold out.

So, if you want one of any of them at a halfway decent price, you should buy it now as prices will majorly increase and available inventory will dwindle. At least, until the AI bubble bursts anyway.

Yep - like other said, avoid Amazon. I ordered a new Keychronic wireless keyboard and $89 KVM switch within the last month.....and guess what ? Both items were clearly customer returns with the customer return labels right on the package! For the KVM switch, box was completely missing and everything was just tossed into a mailing bubble wrap ! I felt super insulted as a customer and feel gyped !

I'm looking to build my first NAS setup, I don't need a huge amount of space. But a big factor for me is keeping the noise level low and the heat level low as they will be in my office next to my computer. Are there any other drives you would recommend for noise levels. Would NVME be overkill in a nas? Was considering the NASync 2 bay.

Not all 12TB have helium according to WD's data sheet. It depends on the part number.

Only the WD120EFBX is helium, according to the data sheet.

I hate what has happened to HDD prices lately, but for a midsize and relatively reputable drive, this seems somewhat reasonable @ $17/TB.
I've had the itch to upgrade my old 3TB WD Red that's been acting as an NVR drive for 6+ years now. I probably should considering its power-on hours.

Edit: B&H Photo has it for $170 too if you want to avoid Amazon - this is probably who they price matched: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/pr..._7200.html
B&H are sticklers with returns....WD direct is better

$16/TB vs $17/TB... not bad for a red drive.

B&H is usually pretty snappy on shipping, too. I get stuff from them faster than I get from amazon as a non-prime member.

..yeah, for an extra $110. Not everyone needs all that space.
And generally you need multiple drives, my order would have been $440 more..... I'm fine with 10TB should last me a whiiiiiile

I just grabbed two 18TB Red Pro's for my new NAS and used a 14% back offer through the capital one shopping app. After considering the 14% back, the drives came out to a cost of $258 each before taxes, which works out to approximately $14.33 per TB. Paying with my PayPal credit card also gained me an additional 3% back in rewards.

I don't know if you used the 20% cash back offer from Paypal, but it stacks with Capital One Shopping if you still have it. The highest I've seen recently for WD through Capital is 24%, so might want to keep an eye out for a higher targeted offer.

For HDD the best I got this week was 30% back for Walmart, which also stacked with the PayPal 20%. They didn't come with the additional year of warranty though.

Yeah, storage is one of those areas where not being able to splurge massively sucks, but constantly chasing the best "value" can lead to spending waaaay more than you need to. Would 18TB for a better dollar-per-tb value be useful to me? Oh yeah, for sure. Do I have an extra $110 to blow on storage that I likely won't need for at least another year or two? No. No, I do not.

They have kept these sizes artifically high priced for years so they can justify the prices on the higher sized drives. I'm dizzy with how unfair the last 7 years have been for hard drive prices. Esp 8TB, never going below $150 and always up.

I can get a 4TB SSD at around $170 the same cost on sale. SSD has almost caught up, and on the next round of doubling, they will be forced to lower these prices or raise SSD prices.

Despite all that, I'm tempted, because this is the best we got, unfortunately.

And whoops, out of stock
