This 5 gallon gas can is mainly valued as a cheap way to store and pour fuel, especially when similar cans have been hard to find under $20. The supplied nozzle is the biggest drawback, with reports that it is awkward, slow, and can leak if used often. Still, the can itself is described as serviceable, and replacement spouts or pump setups can make it work much better. It is a practical budget pick if you can live with the safety nozzle setup.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes. Replacement spouts and kits are available cheaply from Temu, AliExpress, Amazon, and similar sources, and some replacements can empty the can much faster than the supplied nozzle. One workaround is to swap in a real spout or a push-button style instead of the safety nozzle.

  • Yes. It is described as a real decent price, and one shopper said they could not find any gas can under $20 for months. The smaller 2.6-gallon version was even noted as costing $1 more.

  • The included safety nozzle is usable but can be annoying and may leak if used frequently or if the can does not seal well around the nozzle. Some also report that the nozzle is surprisingly decent compared with other safety nozzles, but still not ideal for frequent use.

  • It can, but the nozzle is awkward for small equipment and is better suited to filling cars or tractors. For snowblowers and similar tools, a fuel transfer pump or a smaller can makes filling much easier.

  • Yes. A described modification removes the nozzle's internal spring and keeps it open until manually closed, but the o-ring must be replaced or it will leak. Another common fix is using a replacement spout, which can cut emptying time from about 10 minutes to about 2 minutes.

Complete with the stupid idiot nozzle
Look on Youtube on how to remove the internal spring and you'll find it's not as stupid as the government tried to make it!

I have had some of these as long as 20 years (I keep 15 of them filled in the garage for my Kroger fuel points program) over time the oldest one will seep at the top if you put the full 5 gallon in (on the seem) only one has done that.
For filling the cars I use a shake siphon (available at amazon but cheaper and better quality at Home Depot) I place the can on top of a four foot ladder or a rolling garbage bin, put the siphon in give it 3 shakes and its as fast as the gas pump - no way would I hold these to fill a car at my age. Over the last 16 years or so I have saved an insane amount of money at saving $1 to $1.25 per gallon.

link to the siphon I use if it will help anyone.

Dumb question: how long can you store gas in one of these? Does it just last forever?

All depends on the gas. Garbage gas maybe a couple months. Top Tier maybe as much as 6-8 months. If you're really going to push using aged gas, at least mix it with new gas. Or put in a fuel stabilizer (search them up) if you know you're going to be storing it for a while. (Like in a lawnmower or leaf blower; anything seasonal that uses gas that you might not use for months or until next year.) Gas will not last indefinitely like in those zombie or apocalyptic movies. Just pour it into your car to use and replace the gas for tools on the regular.

Highly recommend these spout replacements: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DQ23D4YD
I've used them with this can and they're great. Can empty the whole can in about 2 minutes vs 10 minutes with the supplied nozzle. Nozzle plastic is fairly rigid so it won't deform or flatten when you pour. Also recommend sawing off the plastic tooth near the hole.

Hey. Thanks for this,. I'm gonna get 2 a spin. The red ones were less than $60 w/ tax shipped. Less than $30 a can? Let's hope they're good.

I have a couple of this type. I break off the little thing you're supposed to push in. Works slightly better, not as good as the old/replacement style, but better.
Bomgaars had some of another type, same size, on sale for $10 before $10 store credit rebate on BF. Got a few. They have a twist lock that works better than these type (opinion).
