last year I canceled mine and then signed up for this and it changed my renewal cost for the original plan date. YMMV

I was in the similar boat, had my annual subscription ending on April 4th 2026. Just now, I first canceled the subscription, then immediately after (within 30 sec.), clicked on this promo link and it told me your subscription has been updated. Then going into my account, now it shows my subscription will renew on April 4th for $72.
So yes, it's #2 of what you mentioned i.e. until a year after the current subscription ends (given you first cancel the existing subscription).

Well, for me it's beneficial and it has gotten better year after year (since 2022) thru AI advancement (?). It really improved my writing beyond grammar and worth $72/yr.
