This pack is legendary. Lasted me 6 years now and still kicking. Strap system in front is ultra secure even if zippers break (unlikely.) Wide hip belt really takes weight off shoulders too.

Too big for personal. I've used it as my carry on.

I don't have this one but I do have a much smaller one I use for mtn biking that I had for I don't know 10-15 years before one of the zippers destroyed itself. Sent it in through their amazing forever no questions ask warranty and they sent me a brand new one. Great company.

is it been considered as a backpack or a large item for carry on? I usually have 20 inch roller luggage and a computer backpack as carryon, not sure is it a problem if I get 20 inch roller luggage and this 40L bag
Most backpacks will be allowed as personal items...most of the time. It depends on how fully it is packed and which airlines your fly. 28-32l is the sweetspot imho for personal item bags.

When placed under the seat is definitely sticks out some, never been hassled over it but it gets noticed. The back is fairly rigid so it cannot be compressed much vertically.

I fly domestic and international all the time using this as my personal item. You should have no issues as long as you can put it under your seat (if you max out it's capacity, it may not fit under a seat, so be strategic). I hate checking a bag, so I've mastered the art of traveling with only carry-on and a personal item. I typically use the Osprey and a roll-on, but I just came back from a 7 day business trip to Cairo using this and a convertible garment bag (https://a.co/d/3glIXOz).
Personal item dimensions are 18x14x8 at most. Unpacked farpoint is 22x14x9. People like you are the problem.

Agreed came in here to comment I've had this on a SD for like 10 years and still absolutely love it, Going very strong. Travel with it always.

Edit - and yes I've never had a problem with them allowing it under the seat. If completley stuffed your legs will be cramped trying to get your leg under the sides of it but yeah it works as personal item.

The Farpoint 40 arrived. It looks well made but quite heavy. The lack of organization is a bit disappointing. I tried it on after packing about 12 pounds of stuff in it. It felt heavy. I did try all the adjustments which helped but I could still feel the weight and could not imagine myself walking very long distance with it or have it on my back all the time. I am pretty sure it is more comfortable than most other backpacks if I had to carry the same weight but I think I would probably rather drag a roller carryon luggage and forego the convenience of being able to go anywhere anytime and not worrying about luggage storage. Am I missing anything here? Should I return this well regarded bag bought at such a good price? Thanks.

Sooo…mine also arrived and it looks like this is the 2024 model.

Seems like they were just trying to move old stock.

I have been eyeing this bag for a while, can't pass on this price. I assume it's the new current version?
Quote from rockydbull :
It is not. There is a 2025 revision. You can see them on the osprey site. Seems like minor changes like pocket shape and some material changes. Still fundamentally the same bag

Can confirm: I received the 2024 version. Not the updated 2025.

I don't think you are missing anything, it just doesn't fit your needs. I see this as a bag that helps navigate a city environment. If going car to plane to car a roller is great. I find rollers irritating going public transit to plane to public transit. Lack of organization is a pretty common feature of these big open hole type bags. I wouldn't mind another mesh pocket or something. For something with more organization but a similar build type check out the REI rucksack 40.
