This cast iron burger press is mainly valued for helping smash burgers and other meats sear more evenly on a hot griddle or pan. The weight and flat surface keep more of the patty in contact with the cooking surface, which can improve browning, crispness, and consistency, and the round shape helps form uniform patties. It is also useful for steaks and other searing jobs, not just burgers. The main drawback is maintenance, since cast iron can rust and the wooden handle makes seasoning and oven use more awkward unless the handle is removed.
Griddle cooks chasing a crisp sear, because pressing raw meat increases surface contact and browning on very hot surfaces.
Burger makers who want thin, evenly cooked patties, because the press forms consistent thickness and helps avoid uneven cooking.
Home cooks pressing steaks or other meats for pan searing, because the weight forces better contact with the cooking surface.
People who want a simple way to shape round patties on a hot griddle, because it forms burgers quickly and keeps them bun-sized.
Anyone expecting a low-maintenance cast iron tool, because the cast iron can rust and the wooden handle makes cleaning and seasoning harder.
Cooks who want thick, juicy burgers, because smashing drives patties down to a quarter-inch style that clashes with that texture.
People who cook burgers on a pan without very high heat, because the method depends on ripping-hot cast iron, carbon steel, or a flat-top.
Cooks who prefer shaping patties by hand, because a thumb indent is less even and can leave the center undercooked.

The craze just comes from something new becoming slightly popular and people jumping on the bandwaggon in fear of getting left behind.

With a press you keep more of the patty touching the hot surface resulting in a nicer sear. Don't know if it matters but smashed burgers seem juicier to me also.
