This cast iron burger press is mainly valued for helping smash burgers and other meats sear more evenly on a hot griddle or pan. The weight and flat surface keep more of the patty in contact with the cooking surface, which can improve browning, crispness, and consistency, and the round shape helps form uniform patties. It is also useful for steaks and other searing jobs, not just burgers. The main drawback is maintenance, since cast iron can rust and the wooden handle makes seasoning and oven use more awkward unless the handle is removed.
The press can keep more of the patty touching the hot surface, which improves sear compared with a patty that balls up.
Pressing raw meat can increase grill contact surface area, which can produce more browning and flavor.
The technique of smashing right when the meat hits the griddle can reduce moisture loss compared with smashing after cooking.
The press can help form consistent round patties quickly, which can make burger thickness more uniform.
The wooden handle can make cleaning and seasoning more difficult than a cast-iron pan, which can increase rust risk.
Rust can occur, including reports of the press arriving rusted and the need to oil it immediately.
The handle uses screws that may not tighten completely after removal, which can require replacing the handle for easier cleaning.
The press is intended for griddle cooking, and using it in other cooking contexts may not work as intended.

The craze just comes from something new becoming slightly popular and people jumping on the bandwaggon in fear of getting left behind.

With a press you keep more of the patty touching the hot surface resulting in a nicer sear. Don't know if it matters but smashed burgers seem juicier to me also.
