Given you start off at the lowest difficulty, no one expects you to be good. Actually you can expect more experienced players to share their gear with you, give you rides, etc. as it's a good community for the most part. I was basically carried by other players the first few weeks as I learned the ropes. Also since any loot found by other players are shared equally amongst other players, playing with others is also a way faster way to gain resources. You can still play solo if you want but given everything I said, I can't see why you would want to.
