I've had one of these for years and have always really liked it. But unless you really want to use the gaming features, I would just get the ONN model that was here on FP a while ago. It was about $50 and I am basically just as satisfied with it. The Nvidia does have a spectacular remote but the ONN one is pretty good too.

This is the 2019 Pro version, so it's 6 years old and still the king of streaming boxes.

In addition to this device, I've also used Google Chromecasts of various models plus a Walmart Onn device. All of them pale in comparison to the speed, smooth UI, and reliability of this Shield. It drives me nuts that they haven't released a version with updated hardware but OTOH, you can see that a small drop in price drives a bunch of demand as it's the best option out there even still.
I bought 170-180 5 years ago and the best android tv to me . Upscalkng is goo 1080 to 4k with good original bit rate. 720 to 4k looks better for classic anime series ( hey gundam)🤣

The only way you're going to do better than this is an HTPC.

I don't get it why people think this is good deal for a 6 year old media payer where as latest Apple TV is much cheaper and much more powerful. I know the os is different but still not a good deal for such high price for ancient hardwares
It's pretty simple for Plex users - Direct play and compatibility with Dolby Atmos and Vision support (Apple TV only supports certain profiles) of local media (Plex server). I stream my own 4k UHD remux rips for the highest fidelity.

The Shield Pro does exactly what I need. Doesn't mean it's "better" overall, just better for my use case. I do prefer the usability and GUI of Apple TV though.

I prefer my DUNE HOMATICS R 4K Plus 4GB S905X4 that I paid $85 last year shipped for half the price over this old tech.

I have 1st gen Apple TV and just bought a 4k TV that the device doesn't support. Pull the trigger on this or might as well wait for the new Shield model? I'm asking because I've been waiting to upgrade all this time haha
Lol. I am waiting new shield model …. No news

I'm surprised this is front page. I have this and it struggles now days. It was great years ago but there are better options now days. I just picked up an onn 4k pro and I would recommend that over this. I have multiple issues with my shield now, Disney Plus struggles really bad, the UI overall generally isn't smooth anymore after all the updates over the years. While Nvidia does release updates every once and a while, they don't really care to maintain this. I was trying to set up the remote finder to work with Alexa. The instructions on Nvidia website don't work anymore. The on screen instructions send you to links that don't work anymore. You can tell they really just don't care about this device anymore otherwise they would have at least updated the hardware. They are just milking it.

Can you plug a USB drive into this thing and it'll decode all video/audio codecs?

not paying this ridiculous price for such an old platform. no av1 decode, no youtube hdr, means no sale. am boycotting until they issue a new model. this paleo model should be $129 or maybe even $99. no way this worth $170. at least update the remote, which is pretty lame.

I bought an original one years ago because everyone said it was the best. It has been wildly disappointing ever since. Not passing hifi audio from steeaming services is a big flaw for me.

Still runs great
Because it is not built on the cheap like the Chinese boxes, and it does not have the 20+ updates a year, which fix and add nothing, just make it slower, like the locked down, hobbled American boxes. This shows what it could (used to) be like without the gotchas. Still, outdated at this point.

I thought this was one of the major advantages over the apple TV.
