I've had one of these for years and have always really liked it. But unless you really want to use the gaming features, I would just get the ONN model that was here on FP a while ago. It was about $50 and I am basically just as satisfied with it. The Nvidia does have a spectacular remote but the ONN one is pretty good too.

This is the 2019 Pro version, so it's 6 years old and still the king of streaming boxes.

If its laggy you need to clean up whatever is causing it, I have a couple of both versions and none of them are laggy at all. The 2019 version has nice upscaling, besides that for my applications I see no difference between the two models.
Thanks - I probably do have a bunch of crap on there I should clean up. I'll see if that improves responsiveness before I needlessly buy the 2019 version.

this or Apple TV lastest gen?
Depends on your needs. If you simply need a device to stream a service that has an Apple TV app, then go with Apple TV.
I use Shields to stream IPTV, and my streaming app is not offered on Apple TV.

BUY THIS NOW! (unless you're a granny)
This is FAST. If you like a slow android box, by all means, buy all the others.Yes, the Apple box is right up there with this, but it just doesnt do what this does. We all know what Im talking about.

It never goes on sale, take that 15% off and enjoy the best streaming device!
No thanks. I'll stick with my Apple TV 4K 128GB; the ACTUAL best streaming device on the market. One that makes sense, hardware and value wise, heading into 2026.

$170 seems insane for a 6-year-old streaming device that's on an old version of Android. I bought two of them for like $80 each used a few years ago and they just collect dust because Roku OS is easier to use.

In addition to this device, I've also used Google Chromecasts of various models plus a Walmart Onn device. All of them pale in comparison to the speed, smooth UI, and reliability of this Shield. It drives me nuts that they haven't released a version with updated hardware but OTOH, you can see that a small drop in price drives a bunch of demand as it's the best option out there even still.
I currently have five of the $10 Onn 4K streaming devices from 2 years ago, all running LineageOS with Projectivy Launcher. I simply cannot imagine what the Shield would do for me that they can't. I'm not saying the Shield isn't more powerful - it obviously is - but I'm not sure what the value of the power is. They have no trouble whatsoever streaming 4K HEVCs from my Plex server (an old laptop that was cheaper than this, plus more functional), using various streaming apps, and SmartTube (at least once it comes back from the signature exposure).

Do most people need more than this? And for those who "need" the extra power, what do you actually do with it?

I would think the mini pc would have killed this box.

Actually, I can not understand why anyone would want this today.

I can get a mini pc with a N97 for like $100 last month... maybe $125 today.

I think the Shield fills a niche of wanting to do more than a streaming device but less than a more powerful device that also requires more setup.

I happen to agree and don't quite see the point of this device in 2025, but it's got a pretty rabid following. To each their own, but I personally want more functionality out of $170 than the Shield offers.

To me a mini pc wins.

TONS of software, streams with no issues, you can play games if you want, and check email and even do anything cause it is a PC. PLus Amazing pop up blockers.

While more expensive... I got the Firebat A5P (8745HS/16GB/512GB) for $234. Not only can this stream, but I can play Baldur's Gate 3 with no issues. But if you want to use it for Plex and you do not game... the N97 will be perfect for you.

The last thought...

Before the price of Mini PC's dropped so low. SURE I was a HUGE shield fan. I even purchased the Shield tablet in the day.

But, IMHO.. it makes absolutely no sense TODAY because of hardware, software, age of technology, and NEW technology that is available.

Look, in the day... it was THE BEST. So sure it has a large following.

But we are not "in the day" anymore. What the shield excelled in was connecting it to your stereo system, etc... but I am pretty sure a mini pc can actually do a better job.

Regarding set up... I don't see this being a issue. I just purchased a mini pc and I was not even required to sign up for microsoft... it just works Smilie.

But I am GLAD you agree cause I agree with you.

I'm enjoying the thread, and would pick this over ATV any day. I have friends with ATVs and the interface is awful and stuttery for no apparent reason.

Anyway, I see people talking about the Onn and such, but I'm not sure what I'm missing? I have had great success with both Roku on both JF (Jellyfin) and Plex. I'm currently running a Roku Streaming Stick (3820X) with JF and I can direct stream everything without issue: Dolby Vision, HDR, DD+ 7.1... all work fine on the Roku. DTS doesn't work on the JF app, but it does work on the Plex app. DTS-MA and TrueHD are the only things that aren't supported, while everything else works fine.

Basically, Roku + JF (or Plex for DTS-Core) works to direct stream almost everything already. What am I missing?

I've used many different streaming devices.

FWIW, my ranking is Apple TV 4k (2nd, or 3rd gen) > NVIDIA Shield Pro > everything else. I don't mind Roku devices (although they are getting more and more spammy with tracking and ads) and various Google TV-based devices (which includes the Shield Pro). I think Roku OS, even on lower-end hardware, generally works well, but it's moving more and more towards privacy invasion. Just today I had to tell it twice on a TV that it cannot snoop on everything that's happening on the screen of my TV (and yes, that is what a recent update is asking to be able to do).

The Shield Pro is less fluid than Apple TVs and has more ads. I've been able to get rid of some of them on the Shield Pro but since Google is primarily an advertising company, Android TV OS is inherently more tracking-centric and spammy than tvOS. Saying that, the Shield Pro is a considerable step up from many other devices and built-in OSes. It's still well behind Apple TV, however, in most functions. The Shield Pro has certain benefits (low power Plex server and specific audio capabilities) and some highly specialized uses, but many people would be better off with an Apple TV instead.

The 5000 ($50) Paypal points showed up. I was able to use $40 credit for the Paypal Credit application as well.

Final cost, all in, about $100.

I hope the Nvidia shows up well with the upscaling, as I'm happy with the dialed-in Onn Pro....
