I use Shields to stream IPTV, and my streaming app is not offered on Apple TV.
This is FAST. If you like a slow android box, by all means, buy all the others.Yes, the Apple box is right up there with this, but it just doesnt do what this does. We all know what Im talking about.
Do most people need more than this? And for those who "need" the extra power, what do you actually do with it?
Actually, I can not understand why anyone would want this today.
I can get a mini pc with a N97 for like $100 last month... maybe $125 today.

I happen to agree and don't quite see the point of this device in 2025, but it's got a pretty rabid following. To each their own, but I personally want more functionality out of $170 than the Shield offers.
To me a mini pc wins.
TONS of software, streams with no issues, you can play games if you want, and check email and even do anything cause it is a PC. PLus Amazing pop up blockers.
While more expensive... I got the Firebat A5P (8745HS/16GB/512GB) for $234. Not only can this stream, but I can play Baldur's Gate 3 with no issues. But if you want to use it for Plex and you do not game... the N97 will be perfect for you.
Before the price of Mini PC's dropped so low. SURE I was a HUGE shield fan. I even purchased the Shield tablet in the day.
But, IMHO.. it makes absolutely no sense TODAY because of hardware, software, age of technology, and NEW technology that is available.

But we are not "in the day" anymore. What the shield excelled in was connecting it to your stereo system, etc... but I am pretty sure a mini pc can actually do a better job.
Regarding set up... I don't see this being a issue. I just purchased a mini pc and I was not even required to sign up for microsoft... it just works
But I am GLAD you agree cause I agree with you.
Anyway, I see people talking about the Onn and such, but I'm not sure what I'm missing? I have had great success with both Roku on both JF (Jellyfin) and Plex. I'm currently running a Roku Streaming Stick (3820X) with JF and I can direct stream everything without issue: Dolby Vision, HDR, DD+ 7.1... all work fine on the Roku. DTS doesn't work on the JF app, but it does work on the Plex app. DTS-MA and TrueHD are the only things that aren't supported, while everything else works fine.
Basically, Roku + JF (or Plex for DTS-Core) works to direct stream almost everything already. What am I missing?
FWIW, my ranking is Apple TV 4k (2nd, or 3rd gen) > NVIDIA Shield Pro > everything else. I don't mind Roku devices (although they are getting more and more spammy with tracking and ads) and various Google TV-based devices (which includes the Shield Pro). I think Roku OS, even on lower-end hardware, generally works well, but it's moving more and more towards privacy invasion. Just today I had to tell it twice on a TV that it cannot snoop on everything that's happening on the screen of my TV (and yes, that is what a recent update is asking to be able to do).
The Shield Pro is less fluid than Apple TVs and has more ads. I've been able to get rid of some of them on the Shield Pro but since Google is primarily an advertising company, Android TV OS is inherently more tracking-centric and spammy than tvOS. Saying that, the Shield Pro is a considerable step up from many other devices and built-in OSes. It's still well behind Apple TV, however, in most functions. The Shield Pro has certain benefits (low power Plex server and specific audio capabilities) and some highly specialized uses, but many people would be better off with an Apple TV instead.

Final cost, all in, about $100.
I hope the Nvidia shows up well with the upscaling, as I'm happy with the dialed-in Onn Pro....
