Pharmacist here. This medication is highly anticholinergic and sedating. Avoid where possible and definitely avoid for regular use. Melatonin, trazodone, or low dose mirtazapine would be safer

Stop using Benadryl regularly for sleep, long term use of Benadryl is linked with dementia

Yes, MUCH better quality sleep with this than diphenhydramine. I take a half tab nightly and it helps me stay asleep / fall back asleep if I wake up after 3-4 hours.

I've been taking Doxylamine Succinate for years. I only taking a 1/4 of a pill at a time now because it knocks you out and it can be hard to wake up in the morning. Take too much and you'll be like a zombie the next day.

To each his own - Both work as H1 blockers so similar in how they work This one tends to last longer (basically double "half-life") so can definitely be more "foggy" in the morning - I'd start low like others mention (1/4 or 1/2 tab) to assess tolerance

Doxylamine succinate is not good for your brain.

CBT - I is the answer.

Those won't relax you like a tranquilizer. Ativan used to make me feel like I was well rested even before sleeping. Doxy just sucks the life out of me long after waking.

Ativan is great at reducing anxiety and improving sleep, but having used it myself it shouldn't be taken often. Frequent use and higher doses diminishes the effect, and any development of dependence will result in withdrawal that will heighten the symptoms people are trying to escape (anxiety, insomnia, etc).

Powerful drug to be used with caution. It should be used as medicine, NOT a lifestyle.

Might want to rethink that strategy. The risks with this medication and diphenhydramine are very well established

Yes, the research is clear that this can increase your risk of dementia, particularly with regular use. That said, I've only ever used these occasionally, rarely more than half a pill, these days 1/4 a pill. If you're taking a whole pill every (other) night then I would strongly recommend considering another solution.

Hmmmm.. my wife would take a Benadryl or generic version of it every night for sleep aid. She died of a brain tumor three years ago. I wonder if that was a cause or at least a contribution to the glioblastoma?
