It might depend on the location. I'm in Maryland but have been to one in Massachusetts and California recently with the same experience.
You still need to show your card up to 4 times in one visit with at least 3 times now. At Sam's I don't even do it once and never wait in line. The Costco line is almost always long and inconsistent. My local one had self checkout but just got rid of it. The one I just went to in MA still had them(still a line). Weird and inconsistent.
There is definitely stuff I like at Costco more but the membership is like 3x the cost and gas would probably be the biggest ROI but I'm not waiting in that crazy line. Mine the phone doesn't work either you you have to dig out the actual card and they have some weird accordion thing that makes the gas stop pumping easily. This seems to also be a "feature" at all the Costco's. While I'm thinking about it, you have to pay with a credit card at Costco too so you need to pull out 2 cards. Probably why it takes so long. Sams you just scan your phone and pay in 1 second.
At our Costcos, you show the card once - while entering the store. period. You also can pay with cash. food court items can be run up by regular checkout cashiers and paid in cash. We do that quiet a few times to avoid standing in line for ordering food.
With Costco Executive Membership - it's actually a good investment. Invest $130 .. get back a few hundred cash back. Plus Visa card benefits.

I misspoke a bit. You don't need to show your card on exit but you do need to show your receipt so you have to carry that with you and juggle that. No longer required at Sam's.
you can do all that other stuff at Sam's.
You still need to wait for the food. You can order the food on the app before you even go in the store or whenever you want so it's being made while you walk around. Total game changer. You never go to a register, just scan with your phone and walk right out the store. No line, you can even put your phone away while walking out the door! No paper receipt.
Obviously if Costco is your only choice in an area, I'd put up with it. They have good car battery prices company to Sam's but they also don't have lawn mower batteries. I have a list of stuff that's better at each place.

Can't stand Costco. Hate the way they throw an absolute fit over showing your card to get in.
It's not only to ensure the sell memberships, but some manufacturers will only agree to allow items to be sold at a certain price if that item's price is obscured, e.g., unavailable to the general public.

If I have one group of stores selling my widgets for $100 each, but I want to offer a better price at a large retailer like Costco, say $75, I would want to make sure that there's a limit on who can buy them. Otherwise I risk canabalizing those $100 sales, and that first group of stores will not be happy with me.
Sometimes this is farcical, the 'see price in cart' being a prime example.

Welp, I'm not understanding. I added the 50" Hisense TV and 2x Orvis throws which should come to $252 after discounts, but it only shows the $35 off for the Allstate plan (that's supposed to be free.) Should be $75 off total.

I walk in, scan my own items, and walk out. Costco blows any more.
We both have Costco and Sam's.

And when I tell you that Sam's feels too ghetto is not even close. And we like both. It's just that Costco has better organization, customer service, and pretty darn solid return program.

Again. We own both Sam's and Costco. But we love Costco more.

Not really.

If you workout 6 times a week, and use 2 scoops per day, it will be gone in a year.

So even if you use 1 scoop per day, it will take 2 years at the same frequency per week.
Are people really out here taking protein powder every day?

Wild. I work out once a week and hammer some on that day and that seems to build a ton of muscle, y'all must be beasts!!!

It is a members only club... how else are they supposed to verify your membership?
Plus, they want to be sure you have your card with you so you don't wind up clogging up the line and abandoning a cart at checkout if you forgot. Not sure what sort of "absolute fit" that Russell2 has witnessed. It's not like it's difficult to flash your card (or show your phone screen) as you walk through the door. If you have it, you keep walking. If you don't you don't, then you need to go get it. It saves everyone time.

But they don't check your picture on the card when you scan it...
All the Costcos near me have your picture show up on the kiosk where you scan your card.
