You can cancel your membership right after signup to retain the Pro membership and turn off auto-renew. I just did this.

If you live in NY get the lifetime NY state park pass that lets you visit all the great state parks for free, for life.

Yes when signing up, but it won't charge it. It did test and refund $1, I got an alert on my GPay. But then went in and cancelled auto renewal. It was easy and I'll try it out for the year.
