Sitting on these is a good way to effectively get newly launched products at a discount. This is how I purchased my Switch 2 at launch. Also great to keep on hand to stack with other deals

Yeah, but if you had that money in an S&P 500 index fund this year, you would have made 16.11% year to date.
Why sit on any money? Bank accounts don't keep up with inflation. Your money is literally worth less the longer you keep it there, and sitting on cards in your home is even worse. As prices rise, your cards will lose buying power and you earn zero interest, while target gets to invest and make compound interest on the free loan you just gave them. NO.

It would have made less than the 10% I saved during the 5 months between purchasing the gift card and using it. Also the average is more like 11% annually. So one could expect the 10% savings to be better than an S&P return as long as you use it within the year and don't wait til the end of the year to use it.

Obviously market returns aren't guaranteed though. This is 10% savings. Markets could go up 20%, remain the same, or could go down.

How much do you pocket after taxes? Gift card money is liquid and instantly usable when you want to make a purchase. Investment capital is a long-term strategy that is built on compounding interest. Stop comparing two different models. I can't get $50 off at Target from the S&P 500.

100% agreed! It took me forever to spend the last $500 (in fact I still have $100 left now). I only buy minimal household stuff like food, cleaning, and health/wellness stuff. Rest of the store sucks compared to Amazon...
