Not sure why your post got two "not helpful" --- knowing whether a drive is CMR or SMR is definitely good information and could be a determinant for some. SMR drives have a much higher failure rate, lower reliability and slower performance as well. SMR is Perfectly OK for many use cases. A drive that just sits in a corner and gets used once a month to make a backup or something, great. But it's not something you'd want to have in a machine that's on and used all the time IMO.

I bought 7 of these through out covid. 5 of them failed with in the past 4 months. It's ridiculous. These things do have a particular lifespan it seems.

i bought a few wd element hd disk, one died after 9 years (brand new), one died after 2 year (refurb). I think seagate is better

Disk usually last much much longer. Would expect an ssd to break as like those sandisk external hd.
