Fun fact: You know how AI has been trained on pretty much everything that exists on the internet? You know what exists on the internet? Digital books. Type 'Summarize 'book name'' into your favorite AI and voila. That's all these apps do now anyway and they just use AI voices to read what was summarized. The best part about doing it yourself is you can ask specific questions about the book or ask it to put the summary in a specific format or expand the summary, etc. Probably a lot more insightful than whatever you're paying for with this app.

I remember when they had those terrible fake AI ads on games and such - really turned me off. I get it, they use AI for summaries and voices. Which is fine! Blinkist does the same. But to blatantly take content from Ted Talk videos and then pretend that people were doing Ted Talks about Headway (super obvious because they didn't even use AI to cover the lips not matching) just comes off very scammy like all those other faked promos.

I'm tempted by this, but I got the Blinkist year subscription deal last year and never used it, so probably not worth it. But I sure do love a lifetime sub deal (for some reason).

It is if you need whatever this silly product is. If it was free I'd sign up then never use it.

This is no substitute for reading an actual book!

From a Reddit Thread:

Headway app is not a scam, I have used it (but do not recommend it). It is cheaper than Blinkist, but only by a few dollars. Annual subscription of Blinkist is around $80-90 but you also could share it with another person (potentially making it half-price). Headway app is hovering between $70-$90 depending on how you buy.

The book summary quality/podcasts are much better on Blinkist. If you are going to invest on yourself, don't go cheap. I would rather pay a few extra bucks a year for a service that I might actually use rather than buy something cheap I might never use.

==//==

If I'm using Blinkist as my reference point, I had the subscription for a year (for free through something). I remember comparing the Blinkist summaries vs the actual books that I did read, and sure, you'll get the key points...but with much less color from the stories around them--and accordingly, less ability to retain the content. Back when I had Blinkist was also pre-ChatGPT. Now, with ChatGPT, I suspect I can get the same quality...potentially even better summaries out of GPT 5.1.
