The AVR X3800H stands out as a feature rich receiver for home theater, especially for anyone chasing Dirac and Dirac ART at a relatively low street price. The comments highlight strong value versus pricier Denon and Marantz models, with the X3800H seen as enough for many 5.2 or 3.1 setups and capable with 4 ohm speakers. The main knock is price, since this level has been available cheaper through refurb, open box, or past sales, and current pricing around $1350 feels high. It is a compelling option when calibration features matter more than extra channels or power.
Listeners building a 5.2 or smaller system who value room correction over extra amplifier power, because the Dirac features matter more than the unused channels.
Shoppers comparing midrange AVRs on sound quality, because the extra power and higher model tier were not heard as a meaningful upgrade in surround use.
The X4800H is described as offering little audible improvement over the X3800H for surround use, with the extra power supply mainly helping if you actually need more amplification. The X6800H adds better specs and more amplified channels, but the price jump is framed as roughly the cost of buying Dirac licenses for the X3800H.
Yes. The X3800H is repeatedly described as the cheapest route to Dirac ART, because ART was previously limited to far more expensive processors and the X3800H can access it at a roughly $1300 street price, with one comment citing $640 for all three Dirac licenses.
Several comments put the X3800H below this price: A4L had it at $1300 new and $1200 refurb, and Denon refurb plus a 10% code with cash back reportedly brought it to about $953 after tax. It has also been seen around $650 open-box at Best Buy/Magnolia, so $1350 is viewed as high unless you specifically need it now.
It can power a 3.1 or future 5.2 setup, but the extra channels and higher-end features may be overkill if you will never go beyond that. One comment specifically questions paying twice the price of an X1800H for a 3.1 system with 4-ohm L/R and center, while another says the X3800H handles 4-ohm speakers better than the Onkyo RZ50/RZ30.
It is reported to do better on 4-ohm speakers than the Onkyo RZ50 or RZ30, and it is considered capable of powering speakers like Q11 Meta/Q6 Meta in a modest setup. If you need more headroom or plan to push beyond that, external amplification may still be the safer choice.
So you paid $300 more for looks & say it was built in Japan, that's not a sonic benefit imo.
Imo putting that $300 to getting Dirac Live(equivalent to what the 805 includes) would be more beneficial imo.
Heck $640(right now) gets you all 3 which includes ART.
That's $650+$640=$1,290!!!
I can tell you from personal experience that will easily compete(if not surpass) with even your Arcam sonically & costing much less to boot!!!
I read about plenty of Arcam owners not to happy they have no access to ART!
Yes I have read forums on A1EVO.
Not much different than in here.
Most naysayers imagine the performance based on reading.
What was your opinion on A1EVO again?
Not sure where you get this many and most..?
I would like to see you substantiate that...but I know that wont happen
I didnt own the X3800...so I cant speak to the sonic differences between the X3800 and X4800
Cost of ownership between the two would probably be the same after I sold its a few years
By the way I look at cost of ownership....resale price versus what I paid in a piece that I know I am not going to keep long term
The market pays more for Japanese made Denon /Marantz products on the used market..frankly personal opinion is moot point
I am only concerned about what the market will bear.
I will tell you, from my personal ownership, that the Denon X4800, The Marantz Cinema 40 and Cinema 30 did not compete with my Arcam AVR31 in the formats that they could jointly do
Again...some of the guys on AVS forum have said that Denon/Marantz has stepped up their game on their current generation higher end models. This is versus both the Denon flagship AVR and the Marantz pre pro that I owned a generation back
So maybe the Marantz AV10 has the same musical chops..or likeable to my taste...of the Arcam AV41
Lets assume that and with all the Dirac licenses I would have to buy that is a few thousand above what I have in the Arcam AV41
The quick math says it would cost me $3000-4000 to get the Marantz Av10 and all the licenses
It would have to be on a complete other level for me to make that decision

Hmmmm would I pay Arcam/AV10/flagship AVR prices for "musical chops", that's a BIG NO imo!
Those "chops" benefits are not relevant when it comes to surround sound.
Plenty of people on AVS have validated that, which I agree with from plenty of personal experience.
Dirac is a surround benefit, clearly that's two different topics.
You have often said Dirac is heads and shoulders better regrading "surround chops".
If true the Dirac on your AV41 or on the AV10 is exactly the same on the 3800!
That's a verifiable fact!
What's perplexing, you often have also said no one should pay for Dirac on a $1k AVR!?
The irony here has been the pleasant surprise using ART with two/surround channel music!

Thats 99% your opinion...as typical
You have no idea what I actually paid for their Arcam AV41...so you have no point of reference in that regard
I have heard that Denon /Marantz has stepped up their game on their higher end/flagship models versus the past. This is from AVS forum members who have bought the Marantz AV10 and Denon A1H, specifically
I have owned neither of those and cant offer an opinion from my own ears within my listening environment.
One would hope so when they have lower end models that wont pass the SINAD testing on Audio Science Review
if you are reading opinions on AVS forum as you mentioned
You will see that some people are not really that impressed with D ART
Though that does seem to be isolated to Denon/Marantz...as I dont think I have ever seen a Storm Audio owner post something like that
I do think Dirac is significantly better than the other options that the Asians had..Audyssey, MCACC and YPAO
There is that double blind test out there with AV professionals that speaks to some of that also
And yes...as you have often said " No one is interested in DLBC"
Though you can never substantiate any of your use of " many " " most" and " majority of" terms
In my opinion..I speculate that I do not see that typical buyer spending $800ish in licenses/calibration mics on a $1000 AVR
Whereas, that seems to be pretty common with owners of the Marantz Av10 and Denon A1H on AVS forum

Actually it's 100% my opinion based on owning the 3800 with ART and plenty of experience with Arcam(& others).
As a matter of fact a friend with the 41 is now pissed he has no access to ART after listening to my setup and other friends C50/C30!
Yes we have no idea what you paid for the 41, doubt we ever will!
One fact we do know though.
You could have had it all for $1290 right now!
So even if you bought the 41 close to that(VERY unlikely) you're still missing DLBC, mic & ZERO access to ART!
Unless you use the cheesy mic that comes with the unit.
Thats only $100 though.
I do agree ART is only really worth it with an optimal setup.
So likely wouldn't be worth it to you anyways.

I see..
I choose to use my actual transaction prices a litmus test of value. You have no idea what I paid for the Arcam units and it was well below retail
I didnt pay anywhere close to retail for the Marantz Cinema 30 either
You statements seem to point that as you go up the Denon/Marantz product line that the products are not any sonically better?
Is that correct?
if so..I think you would find some disagreement on that
How would I have got it all for $1290 right now when the other units I have at hand at the moment...the Marantz Cinema 30 being a good example are deficient to my ears.
This is versus the Arcam units before any room correction is even engaged?
For someone who says A1EVO is " as good or better" than Dirac
Why would you spend the extra money for something that you think is about the same or worse?
That makes no sense to me
If I felt that way I would put the money is a better spec'ed unit
Really, the jump from the X3800 to the X6800 is about what you would pay for all the licenses in what the two units regularly go for from a street price perspective
The X6800 spec wise is a better unit than the X3800 in every way..better Sinad, better amp/power supply, more amplified channels should you need them
Based on what you say that " A1EVO is as good or better, it would be easy for me and I would spend the money on Dirac
As I stated before...on AVS forum there are people that are not exactly thinking that D ART is a game changer and/or doesnt offer much performance wise
If you read through the AVS forums posts as you say you have..then you already know that

The $1290 comes from the "transaction" you said you passed on!!!
Why read, I have personal experience.
I'll leave the speculation & imagining to you!
Asked and answered but I'll state it again.
In a surround setting, properly implemented there isn't MUCH of sonic benefit to the 6800 vs 3800.
Definitely not for the much higher price, especially if you could have gotten the 3800 for $650!!!!!!
Sinad adds no sonic benefit for surround sound, many many people over on AVS will validate that.
Amp/power supply is easily negated with pre outs, just ask people with pre-pros they will validate that opinion.
If I'm not using 13 channels it's zero benefit and a waste imo.
I have the setup to take advantage of Dirac especially ART.
Just crazy to think you can have it for $640 right now!!!
I know a few other brand owners that are not very happy right now!
If one doesn't or on a budget, A1EVO is definitely the way to go ime.
I gives you pretty much the performance of DL & DLBC, that has definitely been validated over on AVS!
A pity we didn't get decent pricing on the 3800 this past weekend to coincide w/ the Dirac ART sale. I'm actually surprised at the number of people on AVS who are upgrading all the way to ART w/just a lowly 3800 (perhaps I shouldn't be as it's just about the worst kept secret in the audio industry by now). Just one of the happy customers:

LOL...hmmm...from someone that uses " Most people" and the " majority of"...but can never substantiate their statements with data
I am also the one that believes personal ownership can make a big difference versus " experience with"
But I am the one speculating? .LOL..ok
It is crazy for a couple of reasons
From someone why says A1EVO is" on par or better than Dirac"..
Makes no sense to me to spend the extra money if that is your opinion
That seems like a waste of money..using your analogy of the X3800 versus the X6800
If your only outcomes for spending extra money is just par or worse than par
But I understand ..its all just your opinion and that is the long and the short of it...
Despite the" Most people" and " majority of" statements you make all the time.
I understand
Its somewhat interesting that some D ART buyers are not exactly happy with their purchase
But you know that since you read threads on AVS forums

Yes speculation/imagining!
We are in a 3800 thread & you telling people what it's worth! You're debating with me about it's performance! You're questioning/debating how good or bad ART performs! In flagship PAC threads you constantly say they are better than the 6800!
Yes very much speculation/imagining imo.
If I remember correctly ol' Gene tells you what to imagine!
Not surprising, if I recall 1 in 5 units you own have DLBC!
You would be one of those that would not find ART a benefit since it's an extension to DLBC.
ART is definitely not for you, I suggest sticking to your Pioneer LX805 without DLBC!

LOL
I say what its worth to me
You are the one speculating about what I should have bought perhaps for your situation...which is clearly very different from mine
Again your opinion
Like all your comments about " Most people" and majority of"?
Those can never be substantiated and there are no surprises there...
Then "A1EVO is on par or better than Dirac"
That sounds very clear to me as a statement........hmmmmm
And FYI..I dont have the Pioneer LX805 anymore...there is an Integra 8.4 in that spot
if I wanted ART I have a device in my home I could get it...the Cinema 30 is capable
I do participate in the PAC threads just like you ...and I have personally owned a few of them

Then you might want to learn to articulate your opinion better.
Just in this thread your 1st words were this is not a deal!
FYI "IMO"!is not saying the "worth to me"!
Clearly that has nothing to do with debating the performance!
Never said what you should buy, I mentioned what YOU said you didn't/wouldn't buy!
Which is conflicting with what YOU have also said often.
"Dirac" is head and shoulders better!!!
Which is it!?
What your experience with A1EVO?
Oh yes YOU said there is some "blind test" comparing it to Dirac you imagine from.
Still waiting for you to post that video comparison.
I'm not sure if this is worth twice the price of an x1800h. I have 4 ohm center + left/right, but add in a sub and thats it.. basically a 3.1 system. Most I'd ever upgrade to is 5.2 and thats years down the line.
I dont want to wait another 6 months the for a better price. Anybody know the prices come down or Christmas deal gets any better than this?
I don't think anyone can predict this; none of these sales seem cyclical. The only thing you can count on is clearance after the new models drop. Currently A4L has x3800h new for $1300, refurb for $1200.

Sorry, I couldn't quite grasp what the secret is. Are you saying buying ART for 3800 is meaningless ? I was planning to upgrade my x1300 to x3800 to potentially buy ART, among other reasons. Are you suggesting that's not a good idea?

As I stated before...on AVS forum there are people that are not exactly thinking that D ART is a game changer and/or doesnt offer much performance wise
If you read through the AVS forums posts as you say you have..then you already know that
I choose to use my actual transaction prices a litmus test of value.

I do participate in the PAC threads just like you ...and I have personally owned a few of them
Just in this thread your 1st words were this is not a deal!
