The headband on the xm5 is very different than the xm6. The case for the xm5 is larger than the xm3 & xm6 as the xm5 can't fold inward. The xm6 solves the hinge problem posed with the xm3 as it's a completely different design. The hinge design of the xm6 is also very different than the xm5. In my opinion, the XM6 is quite awesome. I haven't even delved into all the various features. I basically just took them out of the box and started using them as is. The ANC from the xm3 onward is simply amazing. It's hard to believe that the xm6 has improved upon previous iterations, but it has.
On my xm3's, of course the headband broke on both sides but I followed a YouTube video tutorial to glue them back together and they work great again. They were actually quite easy to fix using no additional parts. It was actually a rather fun project. Once I fixed them, it appears they have now become impervious to the hinge problem. I don't have to be careful with handling them anymore, they are solid!
