Here's a few reasons why:
In espresso, the grinder is half the quality equation. A good burr grinder gives you particle uniformity and precise micro-adjustments. Most built-in grinders (even on $700–$1,000 machines) simply can't match the consistency of a standalone.
With an integrated-grinder machine, once the grinder burns out or the burrs dull, the whole unit is compromised. With a separate grinder + Bambino Plus, you can upgrade one piece at a time over the years instead of replacing an entire machine.
Espresso needs tiny adjustments based on bean age, roast level, humidity, etc. Standalone grinders offer far more grind steps and control. Built-ins usually have limited adjustment, which becomes limiting fast if you drink espresso daily.
The Bambino Plus punches way above its class with the ThermoJet system and one of the best milk steamers under $1,000. Most "fully featured" machines in the same price bracket focus on convenience, not espresso/milk quality.
For people who just want push-button espresso, all in ones are fine. For people who want cafe-level shots, consistent crema, and real microfoam, a machine like the Bambino Plus paired with a solid burr grinder wins every time.
So the difference isn't about the Breville name. It's about flexibility, consistency, longevity, and the ability to grow with your skill and taste. Two-piece setups are the standard in cafés for the same reason. FWIW, I thought Nespresso was heaven about 5 years ago and I dont even know where that contraption is now in my garage. Tastes evolve and there is technique lovers so there are products for everyone…
