This Canon color laser all in one stands out for duplex scanning, wireless printing, and solid everyday document output, with color photo prints described as decent for home use. The toner setup is the biggest theme, since replacement cartridges are expensive, starter yields are low, and even generic sets can run well over $200. Canon cartridges are generally not locked out, but toner levels may not be monitored reliably. It fits best for light printing where having color and duplex scanning matters more than running costs.

Some of the comments above are worth the read, others have no clue what they're saying.
This is a LASER printer, meaning it uses dry dusty toner, not wet, clog your print heads ink. This means is if you don't use it for 6 months or even a year it should fire right up and print perfect just like when you turned it off, this is something that an INK printer would fail at.
Yes toner is expensive, but look at HOW MANY PAGES of print you'll get out of each one and 9 times out of 10 you'll find it's about the same as ink printing page to page cost since an ink cartridge is usually 1/2 the size of a redbull can (og redbull, not the newer bigger cans) and only hold from 5 to 20ml and print 200 to 500 pages. A toner cartridge on the other hand is 10x the size and usually print 1000 to 2000 pages or more.
Sure replacement toner for this will cost more than the printer itself but depending on how much you're printing you may not need more toner for 1 to 2 years or more.
For the home office person that only prints a few times a year but would LOVE to have color this is an awesome deal. Even for a smaller office that finds color would be nice to add, also a great deal, but if you're printing a LOT then add a cheap b&w laser for those random 1000 pages a day of junk someone in your office is printing.

TLBig GrinR inkjets are for suckers. Laser is the way to go. This is a great deal.

What about the linked Brother printer?

It's $120 more, but Brother printers has historically been much more 3rd party toner friendly, and their toners seems to be a lot cheaper too. Comes with a better scanner as well at 1200dpi vs Canon's 600dpi. Although, I'm mostly scanning documents so it probably doesn't matter as much.

Edit: It seems this printer does not support Auto Duplex scanning. Bummer.

I have no brand loyalty. Replacing an old dead Brother, I got the Canon. My brother printer at work is still running, but it's slow and cantankerous with bad print quality. I also have two HP inkjets that clogged when shutdown during covid. Sigh.

I sort of do have a brand loyalty in the sense that, I tend to prefer companies that are less anti-consumer. It's why I like Costco for instance. Brother has historically been pretty good as well, but in this case a Brother printer in equivalent price range isn't available. Even going up a $100+, you still don't get auto duplex scanning, which is a must. So I'll eat the toner cost, as I don't print very much just like you.

Replacement toners are expensive, even the 3rd party one. Try models with 054 toners, replacement costs are much lower.
I've never been impressed by the scanning/copying of any of these AIO devices. A dedicated scanner works so much better. The Fujitsu ScanSnap is our goto. There is some setup learning curve involved but once it's running you'll regret not having one before.

Yeah, toner costs are why I went BW. By the time I need toner in a couple of years, prices should be down some anyway. Laser color is only good for documents anyway, and just stinks for photos.
I have the 632C and I like the quality of the color photo prints I get out of it. It's not as good as a professional photo print, but I can mail order those when it matters.

Can this print on black alone if color is out of color?
It's tempting because cash back cover 2/3 toner cost if one can get 4 toners for 300 and don't print often.

If you choose to print in B&W when you don't need color, it should only deplete the black toner cartridge and replacement should (I think) be on par with replacing the toner in the B&W printer (if not using the literal same black cartridge). Having color available when you want it is convenient.

Great deal. But ink replacement price is a doozy.
Can you use generics?
Yes, you can use generic. Bought this printer 2 months ago and currently using generic ink from Amazon.

I have the MF634C and generic 045H for all 4 from ldproducts is around $80 after coupon. But this model needs the 075H which would be $225 Note that the 075 have 500+ more pages

Different toner carts with fewer prints on the color machine. Granted, super expensive for the BW 70H, but still more prints than 3x 75H and for less money.

Saying "ink" will confuse people. It's "toner" in this case.

Have 656cdw. Toner issue - the low-toner warning seems to appear based on the age of the cartridge, and doesn't correspond to actual toner usage. You are able to dismiss the warning on startup, afterwards it will appear on connected computers, but will not impact any function.

Was thinking about it...then checked the replacement toners. $140 for ONE color OEM replacement on EBay...worst I have ever seen. At those prices it should cook and clean the house for you as well lol. Absolutely crazy...hard pass.
Get the toners from Staples. They are cheaper plus Staples frequently has 40%-50% cashback in reward points.
