This Crucial BX500 4TB is a budget SATA SSD best suited for secondary storage or SATA only systems, especially where NVMe is not an option. The low price drew interest, and the drive should still beat a spinning hard drive in light use or console and NAS setups with modest demands. The main concern is performance, since it is DRAMless and repeatedly described as slow, with weak sustained writes and poor results in heavier uses like Windows installs or RAID5. Availability also looked shaky, with stock issues and price changes appearing during checkout, making it a practical but limited pick.

This is by far the worst SSD I ever purchased, Stick to the MX500 they work fine. This one is painfully slow, even for just storage.

No DRAM which may really slow it down; much worse if you are installing windows on it.

I hate everything about AI from the way it's going to make our already dumbed down kids and world even dumber, to the way it makes corrupt politicians even more corrupt. There is nothing good about it at all.

The MX500 is discontinued at this point so it might not be an option anymore.

Still worthy of getting? Considering 4tb nvme drives are not that much expensive.
I think most people would buy it for secondary storage using sata port and they may run out if m2 ports

No, during the crypto boom a 4TB sata ssd would go for $500-1200 2017-2020~

"At the time of writing, the Intel 600p is the only sub-$400 1TB NVMe SSD on the market." this was 2017.

"Samsung ships the 970 EVO in a wide range of capacities: 250 GB ($88), 512 GB ($150), 1 TB ($278), and 2 TB ($577)." 2018

Even more fun when factoring in inflation.
$565 in 2018 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $728.60 today

This is not nvme
To underline this point and for those who aren't computer savvy this is NOT in the same category, at all, of the ubiquitous nvme storage found on just about everything these days.

Nvme storage is x12 to x20 times faster than SATA III which is what this drive is. While the memory shortage is screwing up pricing everywhere, in theory it should not effect storage going through a memory interface like SATA III as the Ai farms are eating up the volatile DRAM modules that the faster nvme drives utilize. Pointless to have DRAM on an interface this slow.

Dram would help even on an interface this slow, the Samsungs that had it could max out the interface for the duration, these ones choke when sustained. So Samsung can still charge what it wants to.

The price of sata went below nvme for a while, but models and factories closed/switched/discontinued so now there is no price advantage.

No. This specific drive is outright horrible and not a deal at any price.

Generally, not as much as many seem to think.

100% agree. The only problem is the MX500 is long discontinued.

This is incorrect on several points. The interface doesn't matter, these drives use NAND just like NVMe SSDs. The only difference is they might use older types and/or lower binned NAND, but it's still essentially the same thing.

While AI data centers are gobbling up DRAM, they're also sucking up most of the NAND and hard drive production. That's why the price of drives is increasing. These days, few SSDs still have DRAM. It's mostly limited to the highest end models. Also, it is relevant to SATA drives, as they don't support HMB like NVMe drives. The areas that DRAM provides the most benefit (small, random I/O) aren't limited by the bus.

I looked it up and you are correct - they can contain DRAM; my bad.

I'll still argue that unless you're knowledgeable and you know exactly what you're getting for this drive, most people should be going for an nvme drive rather than a SATA III given the more modern interface of nvme.

Bought 3 of these for a RAID5 array in a NAS, stay away if you want that use case, write operations fall off a cliff (amplified by upadting RAID5 parity table). I have to get rid of them now. First time I even tried an SSD in RAID5, I knew it would be slow with no DRAM but wow. Should have just stuck with tried and true enterprise spinning disks.
