This Crucial BX500 4TB is a budget SATA SSD best suited for secondary storage or SATA only systems, especially where NVMe is not an option. The low price drew interest, and the drive should still beat a spinning hard drive in light use or console and NAS setups with modest demands. The main concern is performance, since it is DRAMless and repeatedly described as slow, with weak sustained writes and poor results in heavier uses like Windows installs or RAID5. Availability also looked shaky, with stock issues and price changes appearing during checkout, making it a practical but limited pick.

Shows that it's "Temporarily Out of Stock" and price shows as $351.99. But I couldn't add it to cart to see if the coupon is still available

Would this be good in a PS4 Pro? I know the PS4 pro is sata3, but was only ever intended to have a spinning drive in it and has other bottlenecks that will not utilize the full speed of ssd with DRAM. Still assuming this "slow" ssd would outperform a spinning drive in this scenario.
This drive can sometimes perform substantially worse than a HD.

I see many suggestions for the MX500 as an alternative, but is that practical?

4 TB MX500 seems to be out of stock on Amazon
B&H doesn't know what an MX500 is.
Walmart only knows of a 1 TB variety and a bike.
Ebay has three listed: Used for $200, new for $370, or parts only for $280.

The last slickdeal for the MX500 was in 2024 unless you're talking the fat tire bike.

So as far as I can tell, the MX500 costs more than an 870 Evo, at least right now. But the MX500 is the one being recommended right now.

I'm setting up a NAS that is primarily NVME with a couple of 9mm tall 2.5" SATA 3 slots available. I could make good use of those even with bad write times as long as the read performance is decent. Any other suggestions would be great, but no rush. I'm happy to wait many months, I just thought this was the right time of year to look!

Thanks
No, it's not practical. The MX500 is long out of production. If you want a good SATA SSD today, you have to shell out for the Samsung 870 EVO. Cheaper drives have become a real junk-filled minefield.

I believe the Mx500 cheated on dram with half interleave, so as the other guy said, 870 is the only option left

Depends.
I think the vast majority of people can get away with a DRAMless NVMe SSD because of HMB technology. It performs close enough that most people won't notice ever. It's a bit different with SATA since it doesn't have HMB and relies on SLC cache. Though if the user just consumes content and rarely ever handles large files, it's a non-issue.
I have a Raspberry Pi 5 I use as my efficiency computer just for browsing the web. It runs on a generic cheap midcroSD card, which is way slower than a SATA ssd and I never felt the need to get anything better for this setup.

SLC caching has nothing to do with DRAM/HMB. The pSLC cache is a write cache. DRAM/HMB is used to store a copy of the mapping table (FTL).
