This Fire HD 10 deal stands out as a cheap large screen tablet for media, kids, comics, photo frames, and home dashboard use. The slate color variant is repeatedly confirmed as the Fire HD 10 Plus with 4GB of RAM, and Fire Toolbox or sideloaded Play Store support can make it more usable for browsing, streaming, and simple apps. The main drawback is speed, with repeated reports of sluggish performance, memory limits, and weak long term support. USB C hub charging is also problematic, and the tablet is best suited to light, mostly passive use.

  • Parents setting up a kid-safe streaming tablet, because it handles PBS Kids, Netflix, and YouTube Kids well when used for light, mostly passive screen time.

  • Home dashboard and camera-monitor setups, because it works fine as a glanceable display for Home Assistant, Fully Kiosk, and Wyze feeds.

  • People wanting a cheap digital photo frame, because it can boot straight into a picture-frame app and is cheaper than dedicated frames.

  • Comic and graphic-novel readers, because the larger color screen works well for downloaded comics and calibre-web downloads.

  • People who need smooth web browsing or multitasking, because it can reload pages, run one app at a time, and feel extremely sluggish.

  • Users who want USB-C hub docking with charging and peripherals, because the port implementation lacks proper pass-through and can trigger a moisture-detected shutdown.

  • People who need a tablet for custom Android installs or Fire Toolbox-free modding, because root and bootloader unlock are unavailable and some hacking paths are patched.

  • Buyers expecting long-term software support, because there are no security or OS updates and newer Fire tablets cannot be rooted or bootloader-unlocked.

I've owned every Fire tablet, and they're useless — for some reason they become slower than molasses.

You couldn't pay me to get another cheap Fire tablet. I've had two that worked just fine for a good while, but eventually they both ran so slowly that I couldn't really load any websites or watch any videos, and it takes almost thirty seconds just to wake the damn thing up from sleep. I don't know whether it's poor specs or Amazon using firmware updates to intentionally cripple old hardware, but I'd suspect the latter since they both worked fine before.
I have the same experience. No matter what I do it runs incredibly slow.

I bought one of these Refurbished units from Woot back in February when it was $40 for my mom. She mostly uses it for YouTube all day long. The battery is pretty much shot now- will show 80%+, and restart after 5-ish minutes of use. No issues if used while plugged in. I plan to turn it into a digital photo frame for her.

I will say that I bought her a brand new 2019 model back in 2019 and it finally had a hardware chip failure last week November 2025 so we tossed it. She used the hell out of that thing for YouTube. These things are End of Life. Highly advise against it, unless you have a child who needs a screen. May be a good distraction for children, otherwise this is complete garbage.

Just buy a battery replacement kit off eBay for $15 and DIY. It's very easy to do.

Be warned, a bummer about this tablet is that there doesn't seem to be a good way to both charge it and use the USB-C port for data. Typical USB hubs do not work to pass through power. It may or may not be an issue for your use case.
There are lots of USB hubs that allow charging. I have one right now for my Steam Deck(which only comes with one USB C port) that allows 100 watts to pass through the USB hub while I am using it for high-speed data transfers and connecting other peripherals like a mouse and keyboard. Just search Amazon and you'll find lots of reasonably priced USB hubs that allow this.

Seems like a great deal, just needing a color screen bigger than my phone for downloaded graphic novels & comics to read on Kindle. I can surf the web on my phone, don't need an E-reader for that.

eh is it for this one, because if you go to 12 minutes in it is apparently a nightmare to get out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGwbQsLCj5o

That is what I use mine for. It's a great comic reader. Does well when accessing calibre-web to download my own digital comics also.
I did order one of these the last time this deal hit the front page and it absolutely has 4GB of RAM.
