This Fire HD 10 deal stands out as a cheap large screen tablet for media, kids, comics, photo frames, and home dashboard use. The slate color variant is repeatedly confirmed as the Fire HD 10 Plus with 4GB of RAM, and Fire Toolbox or sideloaded Play Store support can make it more usable for browsing, streaming, and simple apps. The main drawback is speed, with repeated reports of sluggish performance, memory limits, and weak long term support. USB C hub charging is also problematic, and the tablet is best suited to light, mostly passive use.

I have one, they can run one app at a time, slowly. the screen is ok. generally i just have 1 4-cam Wyze screen up.
if we travel i can download netflix/hbo/whatever and watch something on it, but hotel streaming is pretty common now so i dont do that much.
its crazy slow, really, one app at a time tops, in a slow way, so something you arent interacting with much is best. hard to complain for $20 if you want to monitor some wyze cameras or maybe do a photo gallery app? i dont even really want to try reading web pages on it or reddit or anything.

The 2021 is able to be hacked with Fire Toolbox. Picked this up for my wife years ago and did that to it. It's serviceable for general use - media consumption, browsing, etc. Once you have Playstore on it, you can even use it as a second screen device. So for $20, not bad at all really. As others have mentioned, great for kids and in travel if you're susceptible to losing things.

Good write up on the Fire Toolbox update as well, which looks like it works with even 2023/2024 models now:

I have had good luck with these setting them up as digital photo frames. Firetoolbox works, but you aren't going to be able to remove all of the Amazon bloatware. But mine boots up, and auto loads the picture frame app, and that's what I wanted.

You can just side load the Google Play store directly. You don't need fire toolbox. These are great for kids.
Does it attempt to block any app installs or usage?

So these tablets can't run Fire Toolbox? That's been patched?

You have to install a custom launcher through this method?
You'll need to block updates out of the box. And use the latest version of the Fire Toolbox. I think this latest exploit is available in the latest.

I've been using one of these older Fire 10 the tablets for my kid to use for her 10 min of daily screen time. Pretty much only run PBS Kids app and occasionally the web browser, or Netflix on long road trips. No issues.

There was an exploit out there that allowed to block FireOS updates. It also allowed custom launcher:

If one gets a tablet from the deal, don't let it connect to WiFi, and try to block the updates.
Yes, both FireToolbox and Launcher Manager can be applied to these "Trona" tablets.
I have a couple of them that I've put both/either on and they work excellently as single-purpose YouTube Kids players.
Although you can't root these and put something like LineageOS on them, they are pretty good values of your use case is something similar to mine.

Wonder if they are any good for a smart home dashboard. I've seen people use Amazon tablets for it but not sure about this specific model. For the price I might give it a shot.

I run fully kiosk with home assistant on mine and it works fine. Definitely a bit slow but mainly it's just to glance at a camera or toggle a light when I walk by in the kitchen. I have an anker charging stand for it too. For the price, I can't complain at all! I also used fire toolbox on my slate 32g version.
