This Fire HD 10 deal stands out as a cheap large screen tablet for media, kids, comics, photo frames, and home dashboard use. The slate color variant is repeatedly confirmed as the Fire HD 10 Plus with 4GB of RAM, and Fire Toolbox or sideloaded Play Store support can make it more usable for browsing, streaming, and simple apps. The main drawback is speed, with repeated reports of sluggish performance, memory limits, and weak long term support. USB C hub charging is also problematic, and the tablet is best suited to light, mostly passive use.

Common Questions (5)

  • It works well for light, mostly passive tasks such as comics, downloaded media, PBS Kids, digital photo frames, and home-automation dashboards. It is slow for web browsing and interactive use, so it fits best when you mainly view content rather than multitask.

  • Yes, it can be hacked with Fire Toolbox and Launcher Manager, and some setups add the Play Store or a custom launcher for a more usable interface. The key caveat is to block FireOS updates before connecting to Wi‑Fi, because later updates can reduce support for these tweaks.

  • Yes. The Slate color models are the Fire HD 10 Plus variant and have 4GB RAM; the black 64GB model is described as 3GB. Several buyers also verified the RAM in Developer Options and on the About screen.

  • It is generally slow, with some users describing it as only good for one app at a time and others saying web pages reload when memory runs out. A few report it is serviceable after tweaks for media and light browsing, but it is not a strong choice if speed matters.

  • Not reliably. The tablet's USB-C implementation is barebones and often does not work with typical USB-C hubs for power pass-through or full data/video features, and some setups trigger a moisture-detected error. A hub that supports charging may still work for other devices, but this model is a poor fit for that use case.

I've owned every Fire tablet, and they're useless — for some reason they become slower than molasses.

You couldn't pay me to get another cheap Fire tablet. I've had two that worked just fine for a good while, but eventually they both ran so slowly that I couldn't really load any websites or watch any videos, and it takes almost thirty seconds just to wake the damn thing up from sleep. I don't know whether it's poor specs or Amazon using firmware updates to intentionally cripple old hardware, but I'd suspect the latter since they both worked fine before.
I have the same experience. No matter what I do it runs incredibly slow.

I bought one of these Refurbished units from Woot back in February when it was $40 for my mom. She mostly uses it for YouTube all day long. The battery is pretty much shot now- will show 80%+, and restart after 5-ish minutes of use. No issues if used while plugged in. I plan to turn it into a digital photo frame for her.

I will say that I bought her a brand new 2019 model back in 2019 and it finally had a hardware chip failure last week November 2025 so we tossed it. She used the hell out of that thing for YouTube. These things are End of Life. Highly advise against it, unless you have a child who needs a screen. May be a good distraction for children, otherwise this is complete garbage.

Just buy a battery replacement kit off eBay for $15 and DIY. It's very easy to do.

Be warned, a bummer about this tablet is that there doesn't seem to be a good way to both charge it and use the USB-C port for data. Typical USB hubs do not work to pass through power. It may or may not be an issue for your use case.
There are lots of USB hubs that allow charging. I have one right now for my Steam Deck(which only comes with one USB C port) that allows 100 watts to pass through the USB hub while I am using it for high-speed data transfers and connecting other peripherals like a mouse and keyboard. Just search Amazon and you'll find lots of reasonably priced USB hubs that allow this.

Seems like a great deal, just needing a color screen bigger than my phone for downloaded graphic novels & comics to read on Kindle. I can surf the web on my phone, don't need an E-reader for that.

eh is it for this one, because if you go to 12 minutes in it is apparently a nightmare to get out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGwbQsLCj5o

That is what I use mine for. It's a great comic reader. Does well when accessing calibre-web to download my own digital comics also.
I did order one of these the last time this deal hit the front page and it absolutely has 4GB of RAM.
