I know it got promoted a lot at PAX Unplugged this year, complete with green plumbob "crowns" (think: Burger King crown with green Sims plumbob on the front). A number of people were wearing them, but I think The Witcher and Gloomhaven headbands were way more popular in years past.
But I didn't really see people playing the game, I don't recall demos of the game. I remember seeing it in one of the general board game retailer booths, but that was about it.

Thought about buying this because it's the Sims! but then I read the reviews. Seems like it's hyped because it's the Sims but the game itself isn't fun or worth playing.

The booth giving out headbands was running the demo. I checked it out. Also they were selling the game for $20, and another booth had it for $25

Remove the (debatably) favorite part of the game - homebuilding/designing and I don't think there's enough left to be very engaging.
