This Inspiron 14 open box stands out as a compact 2 in 1 with a strong Ryzen 5 8640HS, solid integrated graphics, and easy upgrade potential thanks to replaceable memory and a 2230 SSD. The build and upgradability make it feel stronger than similarly priced alternatives, and the open box pricing tiers look attractive when the unit is actually in decent shape. The main drawbacks are the 250 nit display, which is weak outdoors, and inconsistent open box condition, with some units arriving scratched, dirty, or even with failing storage. It is a better fit for indoor use and for buyers willing to inspect the condition carefully.
people who want a strong integrated-graphics AMD laptop deal at around $255 because the 8640HS was described as an "incredible chip" at that price point with the best integrated graphics seen at this cost.
buyers who plan to upgrade RAM/storage themselves because commenters said the memory and the 2230 SSD appear replaceable and even shared open-box pricing by condition.
indoor users who need a 2-in-1 for everyday tasks because the screen brightness was called out as only about 250 nits, which commenters said won't do well outdoors in sunlight.
shoppers who are comfortable checking open-box condition closely and possibly cleaning/repairing minor issues because one "Excellent" unit was reported to have sticky residue and dust on the screen that the buyer cleaned.
people who need to buy locally without traveling because availability was described as limited and one buyer said they'd have to travel 40 miles to get the 8640HS at the deal price.
buyers who expect "Excellent" open-box to look truly new because a commenter reported their "Excellent" unit was actually a prior display model with scratches on the screen, ripped stickers, and chips on plastic.
buyers who want to use the laptop outdoors in bright sunlight because the screen was noted as only ~250 nits, which commenters said won't perform well outside.
buyers who want more than 16GB of RAM without worrying about the ceiling because one commenter questioned the "max memory 16GB" limit as "woeful" for DDR5.
Yes. The memory and 2230 SSD are replaceable, and the system can be upgraded to 16GB by adding an 8GB DDR5 SODIMM. The practical limit may be 16GB, so it is not a high-ceiling upgrade platform.
Not always. An "Excellent" unit was reported with display-model wear, chips, scratches, and sticker damage, while another "Excellent" unit arrived with sticky residue and dust; a "Good" unit was also reported with a failing drive flagged during POST.
The AMD Ryzen 5 8640HS is the stronger chip, with better integrated graphics and an NPU; the Intel i5 model is described as significantly worse. If you are not using AI features, the 8640 and similar non-NPU chip are treated as effectively equal.
No, 250 nits is weak for sunlight and is better suited to indoor use. It should be fine for typical room lighting, but outdoor visibility will be poor.
Holiday-season purchases were said to be returnable until January 15, 2026, and that policy was reported to apply to open-box items too. It is still worth verifying with Best Buy before buying, since support guidance can differ at pickup or return time.
I tried to buy 2 of these, but one became unavailable while I was being forced to sing into my best buy account (which I hadn't used in years and had to do a PW reset on).
Got a 'fair' condition one about 30 miles away, it's for my mom who has destroyed 2nd hand latitudes in the past... really reconsidering if I should get an Inspiron for her at all...
But I do quite like the specs, price, and upgradeability.
Memory replaceable, but "max memory 16GB? Really? I hope that's a typo, because max 16GB in the DDR5 is *woeful*.
every time i see a suspiciously low max memory, i see people saying, "i installed more and it worked fine." that leads me to believe that manufacturers just list a low max because it's the max that they personally tested (you can only order it preconfigured with 16gb), or for marketing purposes to try to sell you a more expensive system.
Hmmmm. I got the HP Omnibook walmart deal for 479+ tax and bought HP extended care for 3 years for 100. I am considering returning all that and buying this thing with a 4 year geek squad thing, for 430 total.Would that be smart? Even thought this only has 8 gb ram / 512 and the walmart deal had 16 / 1TB
I wouldn't. The BF deal is going to be much more useful for running AI inference. The extended care is a waste for a new laptop unless you are sloppy with taking care of it. If you skip the 3 year extended care warranty which is very profitable for HP for new computers, then, you're close in price ($49) to this older used model with 4 year geek squad.
I just bought for 260 out the door . "Excellent " came with sticky resedo on outter shell and dust on the screen , cleaned it , looks pretty good . I had extra 8gb ddr5, sodimm, installed it now running at 16gb

Yes, plus it looks like the memory and 2230 SSD are replaceable:

Here's the prices I see for Open-Box condition:
Excellent
$269.99
Good
$255.99
Fair
$233.99
The I5 model is a good deal open box also
This is a much better deal for those who can get it. The Latitude build and upgradability make this a far stronger deal.
Congrats to those who snagged one.
