You can do an eSIM swap to get it unlocked instantly with ATT phones but it's YMMV.

You can also ask CS nicely and they will unlock your phone if you have already paid the full price. The new Here are the steps for eSIM swap and some other information around plan cancellation etc. The new ATT policy says automatic unlock after 60 days without active service just like Verizon and I can't vouch whether that's true or not.

After buying the phone in Walmart in installments, you can pay off phone via ATT online chat. For Verizon you have to go to a store.

ATT activation fee can be voided instantly from the bill by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" when the bill arrives even if it's more than 3 days from activation which will mostly happen if you ship it to your house.

ATT version can be instantly unlocked using eSIM swap. It's YMMV but for most people it works if you follow the instructions below and do the transfer of the eSIM properly from iPhone to another phone.

Even if the eSIM swap does not work I have seen some getting the phone unlocked by chatting with CS once the phone is paid off. That also is YMMV

Sim swap instructions

There are two timelines for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. But as mentioned earlier that fee can be voided instantly by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" in the bill even after 3 days.

You can use SIM swap method method to unlock the device. You will have to try the SIM swap roughly 24 hours after paying off the phone. The unlock portal syncs with the billing system every night.

When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the eSIM. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network.

Then transfer the eSIM to another unlocked phone. Make sure you are transferring the eSIM without making a new one so no ATT involvement.

Reboot the other phone, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.

Now go to ATT unlock portal (in incognito mode) and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of iPhone nd submit an unlock request using a different email, phone number, name etc not associated with the ATT account.

Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.

ONLY CANCEL THE LINE AFTER YOU HAVE UNLOCKED THE PHONE. OTHERWISE, YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO UNLOCK IT ANYMORE.

Sucks that everyone has the same question and there is still no answer. Do I need a service plan? or can I just buy this, pay it off of and get it unlock immediately or at least in a few days?

Were they bill credits so you were locked in? That's the rub usually.

I'm going to attempt my unlock request after 10PM Central time, so in about an hour. If it works, I'll update the thread and give the same exact steps I did to get it unlocked.

Is anyone having trouble swapping eSIMs? Unfortunately, despite trying everything, I can't swap my eSIM. The message says, "Your SIM is
Not Supported
This phone number can't be transferred because the number is not allowed by your carrier. Contact your carrier to unlock this device."

I met all the requirements (payoff, 24 hrs after payoff, swap phone off account) for non-customer unlock, but tried filling out the form too many times in-between. As a result, I'm stuck with the "You've tried to unlock this device too many times. Wait 30 days and then submit a new request" message. The wait 24 hours message can be defeated with different device/browser alternating IMEI/IMEI2, but the 30 days problem remains. I've even seen fleabay unlockers (who resell access to AT&T employees taking bribes to issue unlocks) advertising they can deal with the 30 days message as the only error allowed in their system) but for $40 per phone!

You will be billed no matter what. I ported out within 3 days. Att charged me for 4 days of service.
I paid $8.10 after $45.67 credit .
I don't mind being billed for some amount as long as I can avoid full months. I'm an existing AT&T customer so it doesn't really matter to me as long as it all credits for the most part.

report back: I unlocked it following this instruction.
*** Instant unlock using SIM Swap for ATT (YMMV) ***
After getting the phone and paying it off fully, make some calls/texts and make sure it shows up on ATT account
Transfer the eSIM to an unlocked, steps might vary depending on iPhone/android (https://www.att.com/support/artic...KM1001034/)
Make some calls with that phone and make sure it shows up on the account now - no two phones, just the one you transferred to
Wait after midnight, go to ATT.com/device unlock and select non ATT customer and provide imei and a different name, email, phone
Make sure you reply yes to the confirmation email ATT sends

For the sim swap, do we need to make any changes to ATT account or is it simple enough to just do between 2 iPhones with on screen instructions?

Does an eSIM swap from AT&T web link count? Because I can't transfer it between my phones.

Did you follow these steps to swap your eSIM? This is because people usually swap by adding an eSIM option to their unlocked phone rather than going through the steps on the website. Here's how to switch your eSIMs:1. Connect both devices to Wi-Fi®.2. Go to Bring your own device.3. Choose Switch the device used on my line.4. Select Continue. Sign in, if asked.5. Follow the prompts to complete your transfer.

Thank you for sharing. I don't know if I'm the unluckiest person, but I couldn't swap the eSIM on phone, and somehow I activated the phone on December 9th. However, the device's warranty expired in January 2025. Crazy!!! Btw I'll try your swap method, hopefully a little luck will come my way.
