this isnt windows... they will support these processors way past 1-2 years from now. M4 to M1 pro chip isnt as huge of a leap as it was intel to m1. M4 in the macbook air does run at a higher clock speed initially but it does get much hotter very quickly and will slow down considerably (like ~1/2 initial speed) having no fans. Also the m1 pro has higher memory bandwidth speeds. For anyone doing sustained professional workloads, I would much rather have the m1 pro over the macbook air m4.
If you are just using a laptop to browse the internet, the m4 macbook air 100% makes way more sense, but you wont notice any speed difference between the 2 with most basic tasks
Who's talking about Windows? I'm basing my EOL guess on past Macs. Granted, those were Intel Macs, so MAYBE Apple will support their M series for a year or two longer, but that hasn't been proven yet. Nobody should be spending hundreds of dollars based on a guess that Apple MIGHT support them for longer than expected.

I use my second-hand m1 pro macbook pro to do CAD work and 3D scanning. No issues at all for that. Wish I got it for 600 though

I have a M3 pro for work (software engineer) and M1 pro for personal. There's 0 difference because Apple made the M chip way too good that the M1 pro is way more than enough for any day to day usage. I have at least 100 Firefox tabs open at a time. Unless you do heavy rendering or gaming I'm not sure why you'd need more compute power than this.
I disagree. I went from a M1 Pro 14 to a M4 pro 14 base and the M4 is certainly snappier in day to day use. The biggest difference is battery life though. Even when new I never got more than 6-7 hours with my M1 Pro, but with the M4 I'm getting 9-10+ Does that matter for most folks? Probably not. The M1 Pro is certainly good enough and the screen is a huge upgrade over the Air.

As someone still very happy with an M1 Air, I can see the appeal in this deal. But, if you're trying to spend under $800 for the best Mac you can get, you're probably better off with an M4 Air which has had a bunch of sales down to $750. The base M4 crushes the M1 Pro in single core performance, and even beats it out in multi-core. Of course there are screen, speaker, and IO benefits to the Pro chassis, but to speak generally I stand by my statement M4 Air is better than M1 Pro
The better buy is M3 16/512 $800, M1 Pro 32/512 $800, M1 Max 64/1tb $1000-1300
In new or like new with warranty

not sure what youre talking about then, my intel macs were used for at least 5 years before I upgraded them. apple tends to provide security updates for 7-10 years. not sure what you are basing this of off. Currently Tahoe is supported on a macbook pro from 2019 but the older ones are still getting security updates.

You're moving the goalposts intentionally. Yes, older Macs will continue to get some occasional security patches for another few years, but they'll get nothing else. No new features, no new OS updates.

the latest MacOS Tahoe Glass UI is a big downgrade.

M-series will be supported for awhile, but Apple will try undermind it with hog UI and fake Apple AI killing the 8gb ram models

Yeah absolutely. M1 chips are still okay IMO, but that 8GB of RAM on the base models is a huuuuuge weakness.
