The M1 Pro chip is still an extremely capable chip in 2025; even the base M1 is great. Unless you're doing a lot of high-compute tasks, you're unlikely to notice a significant difference in performance compared to the M4. The multi-core performance of the M4 is only around 30% better than the M1 Pro (8).
The only area where the M4 would dramatically outperform the M1 Pro is the neural engine, but I don't think most people are running local LLMs on their MacBooks.
Despite its age, this is still a very capable machine with a solid 3+ years left in it at this point for most folks, and will still best many similarly (or higher) priced new Windows laptops in many regards - battery life/efficiency in particular. That's just how far ahead of their time the M1 & M1 Pro devices were when they launched (AMD & Intel were busy pushing power limits through the roof to compete with one another - which is an awful approach for mobile computing).
...and for those that are saying 'get an Air instead' - sure, that's an option... but these things have significantly better displays and audio, if that's an important factor.
Community Reviews
This 16 inch M1 Pro MacBook Pro stands out for its mini LED display, strong speakers, and workstation cooling, making it especially appealing for media, editing, and desktop replacement use. The chip still feels fast for everyday work, with plenty of headroom for Parallels, VMs, Docker, and other heavier tasks, and the 16GB and 512GB configuration is viewed as practical for most users. The main concern is refurbished condition, especially battery cycles, cosmetic wear, and unknown internal wear. The return window and included Allstate warranty help reduce that risk, and the current price is widely framed as strong value if the battery is decent.
If you want a larger, higher-quality miniāLED display and better built-in speakers for movies/video and photo/video editing, this is a good fit because commenters say the 16" M1 Pro has a major screen advantage and "considerably better" audio than an M4 MacBook Air, making media more enjoyable.
If you're buying refurbished but want risk-reducers like returns and a warranty, this can make sense because commenters point to seller-paid return shipping (30 days) and a 1-year Allstate warranty as ways to "just return it" if it's bad.
If you're using the laptop as a daily/travel machine where you still want strong performance for everyday work plus heavier tasks like VMs/Docker, this is a solid choice because multiple commenters say the M1 Pro 16" stays capable for years and they notice big differences for audio editing, running VMs, and Docker.
If you want a desktop-replacement setup for home/around-the-house (and don't mind the weight and big charger), this is a good fit because commenters describe the 16" as great for occasions/carry around the house and note it's a "behemoth" that's better when you're not moving it everywhere.
If you're a software engineer or other professional who can work comfortably with a 75% keyboard layout (no numpad), this is a better match because one commenter uses a 75% keyboard as a software engineer and wouldn't want to cram it into a laptop with a numpad.
If you're okay treating the deal as "try it and return if the battery is bad," this is a reasonable bet because one commenter suggests using the return window to test battery health and returning if it's truly bad, while still calling the laptop great at this price.
If you're very sensitive to cosmetic condition or missing accessories, this is not ideal because commenters describe refurbished units that can arrive with issues like scratches/dings, debris under the keyboard, or missing original charger/MagSafe cable, and they caution against sellers using non-actual product images.
If you need a perfect battery health experience from day one, this is not ideal because commenters repeatedly warn that with refurbished units you don't know the current condition/cycle count and battery wear can be hard to detect until the laptop starts failing.
If you're expecting the same portability as a MacBook Air, this isn't ideal because commenters call the 16" M1 Pro "a behemoth," hard to handle/carry daily, and specifically complain about the large 140W wall wart for travel.
If you're buying from a seller that may mislabel grades or use "fake refurbished" units, this is not ideal because commenters warn that some listings mix reconditioned/graded units and can differ in battery health and charger/warranty, recommending "like new" refurb as the safest option at this price.
If you're buying primarily for fanless thermals under sustained heavy CPU/GPU load, this may disappoint because one commenter says fanless MacBook Air throttling can be a dealbreaker for heavier simultaneous tasks, implying the Air alternative is the wrong direction for that use case (and the Pro's value is tied to cooling).
If you're trying to maximize value by comparing against newer base models, this may not be ideal because one commenter says they can't justify jumping on another 16GB model when base models from M4 onward are described as matching this performance.

There are some tasks that are better, for sure. If you wanted to stream live for instance with heavier cpu/gpu tasks at the same time, the throttling on a fanless MacBook Air would be a dealbreaker.
General use case, most people would prefer what you have, especially if you are moving it. It's also new.
For 1100 I would try to pick up a minimum 32gb M2/M3 pro, or maybe even a M1 Max. If you're going used/refurb the ram is what really makes the deal, IMO.
There are very few tasks that this would not carry you for the next 5-6 years probably longer. Go watch some videos comparing it with the M4 and M4 Max.
Basically its slower (but for many imperceptibly slower), has no AV1 encoder, no raytracing in GPU. And the neural units are like 1/2 as fast. But it's total cost of ownership is thousands less.
Hint, stay away from water damage and physical abuse. There's also 2 levels of the Max chip, lol. So Max and (more) Max? I think the weaker one has 32 cores
Every thread you just have to say some of the most fact free things ever. It's like a contest with how ignorant you sound. This is a well engineered set of speakers.
Apple used the space for bigger speaker setup, 16 goes deeper. 16 is also 20% more cpu cores so roughly 15% more multicore performance.

That being said I tend to run my laptops into the ground and spend more money upgrading desktop parts instead.
I got this one. $37 more dollars for 32 GB Ram.
First one I got had burnt screen at bottom, some scratches and 84% battery life. Returned that one and got a different once. Great screen, 92% battery and no scratches. My first MacBook and good entry point for me. didn't want Air with only 2 USB-C.
And looked at Terms & Conditions on my Chase Freedom Flex card - from what I could read, I get an extra year warranty even on refurbished items, so it has 2 years warranty.
A 24/512 M4 mini would cost a lot more than a 32/512 used and it would have less ram, no keyboard, no touch ID, magic trackpad, SD reader, screen, mic etc. I did lose Gig Ethernet and the usb-4 ports.
Very solid desktop replacement.
