M4 MBA would have better CPU performance, better battery and new of course so a much better warranty. This still has a much better screen, a larger screen, faster GPU, more storage and is cheaper. For the right person, it can make sense.

Having just switched from a 2017 13in to a 2025 14in MacBook Pro, it's really hard to overstate how much better the 14/16 miniLED display is.

The M1 Pro chip is still an extremely capable chip in 2025; even the base M1 is great. Unless you're doing a lot of high-compute tasks, you're unlikely to notice a significant difference in performance compared to the M4. The multi-core performance of the M4 is only around 30% better than the M1 Pro (8).

The only area where the M4 would dramatically outperform the M1 Pro is the neural engine, but I don't think most people are running local LLMs on their MacBooks.

"30 days returns. Seller pays for return shipping." - I wouldn't be too worried about getting a turd, if you do... just return it. It's also got the 1yr allstate warranty which is essentially a refund if something happens to go bad within that year.

Despite its age, this is still a very capable machine with a solid 3+ years left in it at this point for most folks, and will still best many similarly (or higher) priced new Windows laptops in many regards - battery life/efficiency in particular. That's just how far ahead of their time the M1 & M1 Pro devices were when they launched (AMD & Intel were busy pushing power limits through the roof to compete with one another - which is an awful approach for mobile computing).

...and for those that are saying 'get an Air instead' - sure, that's an option... but these things have significantly better displays and audio, if that's an important factor.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank Undefined.null

I bought this model new years ago and it's going strong. Keeps up really well still.

I have a m3 max now too, honestly don't notice much difference on most tasks. But notice big difference on some things like audio editing and running VMs and docker etc.

Not one thing you said will affect performance! The pro cooling system is overbuilt The air that you prefer wll throttle when the MacBook won't.

More memory bandwidth, better GPU, actual cooling. Much better workstation.

It is weird. This is only the cut down GPU though.

Battery cycles are a concern. If cycle count is too high, then replacing the battery is like 1/3 of the price.
Battery replacement...is $199 more like 1/5th when/if you ever choose to do that!!!no need to try to keep taking unnecessary shots with fear mongering half truths

I paid 1000 before tax for my m1 16 MacBook Pro like 2 years ago. Does everything I need of it, even paid like 60 bucks and got parallels, I run a lot of windows games on it emulated stuff

Speakers and screen are top tier. If I needed a new battery I'd happily pay 200 tomorrrow and do it. I got mine from Microcenter, and was factory refurbished, but at 600 this is a hell of a deal

If equally be happy with that new 16 Mac air though. Or 15 inch or whatever it is. Parallels runs beautifully for all my games, and it's nice having the 16(gb ram it has no issues for anything I do.

Anyone can replace the batteries on these themselves. It's super easy.

Quality of posters (who try to act knowledgeable!) is going down. This is a seller with 54000 feedback 99.9% positive and offers free returns. Condition will be as stated, "Signs of wear do not affect the normal use/functions of the item. Does not come in its original packaging."

Also, the idea someone else put forwards that the $2500 2021 16" Macbook Pro dropped in value to $400 is laughable.

This is honestly, the last good machine Apple made. The last one. I have the 14" and its faster and better than my M4 Air.

Same. Amazing value at this price for a 16 MBP. (Old M1 chip blah blah)
I just bought a used (but in virtually perfect like new condition, there are some minor marks on the screen, but you can't see them unless you're looking for it, and everything else is absolutely perfect) MB Pro 16 M1 Pro, 1TB, for $600... a week ago. FB Marketplace find. I already had a 14 inch M1 MB Pro, but wanted a larger screen for a while. The M1 Pro is still a very smooth and capable chip. I'm actually keeping my 14 inch and turning it into a spare desktop basically, and the 16 inch is my new every day and travel machine. Still years of life left in them.

What would you consider excessive? The MBP 16 M1 Pro I just bought had 155 cycles, and 94%, Normal health. I think it's fine. (not this deal, found one locally for $600 with 1TB SSD)

You never know the condition of a 5-year-old refurbished laptop. It is hard to notice the wear and tear until the laptop stops functioning normally at random time.

This. I have M1 Pro 16 and 14 inch units, and for work they sent me M3 Pro 16 inch, and I literally feel no difference using M1 Pro vs M3 Pro. Both can be very quick. Both can choke like crazy at random times. The typical Apple silicone stuff. The point is, the new M chips shave off render or compile times very well, but in everyday use feel virtually identical to M1.

I wouldn't claim it's better than newer chips, but I think Apple screwed up by making M1 too good. I have M1 Pro 14 inch, and just picked up a 16 inch a week ago. I have M3 Pro 16 for work, and it doesn't feel any faster in day to day use. Literally feels the same, I did some tests opening apps and stuff, and everything is exactly the same. Cinebench is of course better on M3, but it's synthetic bench vs real life use.
