The M1 Pro chip is still an extremely capable chip in 2025; even the base M1 is great. Unless you're doing a lot of high-compute tasks, you're unlikely to notice a significant difference in performance compared to the M4. The multi-core performance of the M4 is only around 30% better than the M1 Pro (8).
The only area where the M4 would dramatically outperform the M1 Pro is the neural engine, but I don't think most people are running local LLMs on their MacBooks.
Despite its age, this is still a very capable machine with a solid 3+ years left in it at this point for most folks, and will still best many similarly (or higher) priced new Windows laptops in many regards - battery life/efficiency in particular. That's just how far ahead of their time the M1 & M1 Pro devices were when they launched (AMD & Intel were busy pushing power limits through the roof to compete with one another - which is an awful approach for mobile computing).
...and for those that are saying 'get an Air instead' - sure, that's an option... but these things have significantly better displays and audio, if that's an important factor.
Community Reviews
This 16 inch M1 Pro MacBook Pro stands out for its mini LED display, strong speakers, and workstation cooling, making it especially appealing for media, editing, and desktop replacement use. The chip still feels fast for everyday work, with plenty of headroom for Parallels, VMs, Docker, and other heavier tasks, and the 16GB and 512GB configuration is viewed as practical for most users. The main concern is refurbished condition, especially battery cycles, cosmetic wear, and unknown internal wear. The return window and included Allstate warranty help reduce that risk, and the current price is widely framed as strong value if the battery is decent.
Common Questions (5)
For everyday use, the M1 Pro still feels very close to newer M3/M4 machines, with the biggest gains showing up in render, compile, audio editing, VM, and Docker workloads. The M4 is faster on CPU and neural tasks, but the M1 Pro remains a very capable desktop-replacement chip.
Battery condition is the main refurb risk because cycle count and health can vary a lot, and a worn battery can be a meaningful extra cost. Reported examples range from about 84% to 94% health, with battery replacement pricing discussed around $199-$249, so checking the return window and battery report matters.
Yes. The 16-inch Pro has a larger mini-LED display, better screen quality, stronger speakers, and active cooling that helps it avoid Air-style throttling under heavier loads.
Yes: the listing was described as having 30-day returns with seller-paid return shipping plus a 1-year Allstate warranty. That reduces the risk because a bad unit can be returned, and the warranty covers failures after purchase.
Condition can range from mint to visibly used: examples include minor edge dings, scratches, shiny keycaps, debris under the keyboard, and battery health around 85%-91%. Some units arrived immaculate with a great screen, so the safest expectation is used cosmetic wear but working hardware.

I was looking for information on the 2 subwoofer setup in the 16, and found this thread of users shocked at how good they are... https://www.reddit.com/r/macbookp...idic
Refurbished is used. This is not Apple refurbished where Apple will change out parts.
My unit had over 400 battery cycle/83% battery life. The keys on the keyboard looks shiny from use. There was a slight ding at the bottom. Not original charger or MagSafe cable.. I would not recommend buyer from a seller that just show press images rot images of the product and say "not actual image"
I would not buy this again unless it's factory refurbished.
For most people just get a new 13" MacBook Air M4 for $750 or less. The M1 Pro is still a great chip in 2025 but it is 5 years old and you have to consider the wear and OS update longevity especially considering Apple have made the MacBook Air such a value and performance.
Every thread you just have to say some of the most fact free things ever. It's like a contest with how ignorant you sound. This is a well engineered set of speakers.

That being said, this laptop is a behemoth compared to a macbook air. hard to 1 handle carry around, heavy in a backpack and overall more combursome but still it is arguably better to carry around than anything else in its class (16+in laptops) The 140w wall wart is huge and a pain to travel with. I bought an anker prime gan charger that only gives me 100w and is considerably smaller, still relatively large though but that was an expensive charger.
In contrast, the macbook air with its 30w charger is tiny and svelete. Easy to one hand, almost disappears into a bag and doesnt weigh nearly as much. And the wall wart is pretty compact but you can buy a relatively cheap 30w GaN charger thats like a 1in cube. ontop of that, its very easy to power off an external battery pack.
If the screen isnt a deal breaker for you, 100% go with the m4 macbook air. Just a much easier laptop to carry around and manage on a daily basis. But if the screen is important, the 16in m1 screen is still one of the best in the business and wont dissappoint.

But idc. It's that nice lol
I'm still stoked 2 years ago I got it from Microcenter factory refurbished for 1k. It's 512gb 16gb model. I did buy a little sd card aluminum flush mount thing and I keep photos and such on it. Been in it years w zero issue. Was like 20 bucks on amazon
I use a 75% keyboard (no numpad) as a software engineer. Certainly wouldn't want to cram that into a laptop
They are fricken amazing
