This 16 inch M1 Pro MacBook Pro stands out for its mini LED display, strong speakers, and workstation cooling, making it especially appealing for media, editing, and desktop replacement use. The chip still feels fast for everyday work, with plenty of headroom for Parallels, VMs, Docker, and other heavier tasks, and the 16GB and 512GB configuration is viewed as practical for most users. The main concern is refurbished condition, especially battery cycles, cosmetic wear, and unknown internal wear. The return window and included Allstate warranty help reduce that risk, and the current price is widely framed as strong value if the battery is decent.

+1. I'm a professional (full-time) music publisher, and the 16" M1 has hands-down the best speakers I've ever seen built into any computer -- and that's in 40+ years of owning computers.
Sound engineer here (mainly live) and it's not even close, for the size they are sound excellent AND they have no real faults, generally can't be driven into distortion, seem to maintain quality sound forever etc. There's some Atmos HRTF decoding too, which makes them sound insane on Apple Music and Apple TV.

I was looking for information on the 2 subwoofer setup in the 16, and found this thread of users shocked at how good they are... https://www.reddit.com/r/macbookp...idiculous/

if this was $750 new, like the M4 MBAir, and also had 20% paypal cashback, nobody would be debating which would be a better deal (MB Pro ofc). but this is refurbished and no 20% PP CB

Oh. Like any device/machine/car? The price reflects that risk.
It's not low enough

Not one thing you said will affect performance! The pro cooling system is overbuilt The air that you prefer wll throttle when the MacBook won't. More memory bandwidth, better GPU, actual cooling. Much better workstation. It is weird. This is only the cut down GPU though.
This is also current MacBook that I use daily at work. I use it in clamshell mode so not getting the full potential with the beautiful screen it has :/Other than then, it's still a beast and handles everything I throw at it very well.

I don't think I'd purchase a refurbished Apple product unless it was directly from Apple itself. Not sure what "professionally refurbished" means. I'm a bit skeptical and would be reluctant to get this.

I didn't buy this but did buy a refurbished 16" MacBook Pro M1 Max 32GB/1TB for $1K on eBay a couple months ago.
Refurbished is used. This is not Apple refurbished where Apple will change out parts.
My unit had over 400 battery cycle/83% battery life. The keys on the keyboard looks shiny from use. There was a slight ding at the bottom. Not original charger or MagSafe cable.. I would not recommend buyer from a seller that just show press images rot images of the product and say "not actual image"
I would not buy this again unless it's factory refurbished.
For most people just get a new 13" MacBook Air M4 for $750 or less. The M1 Pro is still a great chip in 2025 but it is 5 years old and you have to consider the wear and OS update longevity especially considering Apple have made the MacBook Air such a value and performance.

Every thread you just have to say some of the most fact free things ever. It's like a contest with how ignorant you sound. This is a well engineered set of speakers.
And yet, all but the most basic headphones will beat laptop speakers. Some people feel the need to annoy others with their speakers, like with their phones. Headphones are great inventions, I think there's a few deals on SD for them recently too!

I think there are 2 camps here. If you consume a lot of media on your computer, or require a higher caliber larger screen for photo/video editing/grading, then go with the m1 macbook pro. The screen is really the major selling point here over the m4 macbook air. Plus the speakers are considerably better too so movies/videos and such are going to be more enjoyable. I currently have a 16in m1 max mbp and I have had 0 desire to upgrade to anything newer. I have tons of applications running on the computer, running parallels for windows with 100s of tabs open on both oses and its never hiccuped. I dont understand how apple did it but the new m1 chips are on another level and will be supported well into the future like the current m4/m5 vs any previous intel chip.
That being said, this laptop is a behemoth compared to a macbook air. hard to 1 handle carry around, heavy in a backpack and overall more combursome but still it is arguably better to carry around than anything else in its class (16+in laptops) The 140w wall wart is huge and a pain to travel with. I bought an anker prime gan charger that only gives me 100w and is considerably smaller, still relatively large though but that was an expensive charger.
In contrast, the macbook air with its 30w charger is tiny and svelete. Easy to one hand, almost disappears into a bag and doesnt weigh nearly as much. And the wall wart is pretty compact but you can buy a relatively cheap 30w GaN charger thats like a 1in cube. ontop of that, its very easy to power off an external battery pack.
If the screen isnt a deal breaker for you, 100% go with the m4 macbook air. Just a much easier laptop to carry around and manage on a daily basis. But if the screen is important, the 16in m1 screen is still one of the best in the business and wont dissappoint.

I disagree, the speakers are really that good. Itl give basic headphones run for money. It's not like you're sacrificing quality using speaker, they are great and if you are alone, why make yourself wear headphones?

For occasions carry, and around house laptop, 16 is great. If you needed it everywhere you go daily, get the m4 15 air. It is a behemoth, hell everytime I lift it I'm reminded

But idc. It's that nice lol

I'm still stoked 2 years ago I got it from Microcenter factory refurbished for 1k. It's 512gb 16gb model. I did buy a little sd card aluminum flush mount thing and I keep photos and such on it. Been in it years w zero issue. Was like 20 bucks on amazon

tf lol... not every professional is a tax accountant
I use a 75% keyboard (no numpad) as a software engineer. Certainly wouldn't want to cram that into a laptop
I have seen laptops with a numpad, it was huge 17 in dell monstrosity my boss had along time ago. Had horrible battery life and weighed a ton.

I wouldn't claim it's better than newer chips, but I think Apple screwed up by making M1 too good. I have M1 Pro 14 inch, and just picked up a 16 inch a week ago. I have M3 Pro 16 for work, and it doesn't feel any faster in day to day use. Literally feels the same, I did some tests opening apps and stuff, and everything is exactly the same. Cinebench is of course better on M3, but it's synthetic bench vs real life use.
I have a 14 in M1 Pro for work and bought myself an M4 Mac mini earlier this year. Apps open much master on the mini, but overall they feel like the same machine. I do some basic audio editing for my church and there are speed improvements with mp3 exports and using MacWhispers to generate transcripts but the M1 Pro doesn't feel like an old machine.

Because headphones > speakers? I don't know how many times I have to say that -- tinny laptop speakers just don't compare. Seriously, try a pair of headphones that's not Walmart branded and you'll see a world of difference.

I don't know what you mean, the m1 16 inch doesn't have tinny speakers?

They are fricken amazing

Just picked up a MacBook Air M4 for $919 new after PayPal "Pay in 4" with a 15" screen, 512 GB, 16 GB RAM and wondering if I made a mistake after reading all the praise for even the older MacBook Pros. Wonder if this would be better? Too late to get a good price on the M5 14" anymore...
