Is there a permanent defect in these processors? Yes. Is it the end of the world? Not yet.
Once the issue was discovered and BIOS updates were sent out, most of that panic died off pretty quickly.
The only real caveat is that 3-4 months of pre-built systems and retail motherboards did hit the shelves without these updates, which is likely what the "refurbishment" is for.
If it were me, I would trust these refurbished systems but still attempt to decipher the build date and apply the newest BIOS as soon as I got it.
What I would never trust is one of these processors from a private seller. Who knows how long they used it before the BIOS update?
