Great way to teach the game. Please note: all of these are identical (so buying multiple won't get you anything new)

This beginner box is a self-contained way to learn Magic, with two guided decks and eight Jumpstart decks that teach the basics in a board game style format. It is especially useful for new players figuring out colors and whether they want to move on to Commander later. The box is not a Commander product, and the decks are not substantial enough for real multiplayer, so four players would be better off splitting into two one on one games. The contents are fixed and identical across boxes, so extra copies do not add anything new.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes. It is designed to teach the basics, help you figure out which colors you like, and give you a smoother path into Arena, Brawl, or eventually Commander.

  • No. It is a beginner-learning product, and most of the cards would be useless in Commander. It is better suited for learning the basic concepts first, then moving to preconstructed Commander decks if that is the format you want.

  • No. The boxes are identical, so buying multiple copies will not add anything new. It is a fixed product box with the same contents each time.

  • Not really as a true 4-player game. The decks are not substantial enough for multiplayer, so the practical setup is two separate 1v1 games.

  • It includes 2 guided decks and 8 Jumpstart decks. That makes it a self-contained beginner set rather than a pack-based product.

I want to introduce nephews to magic but I'm new myself. We're interested in Commander format so would this purchase help at all?

This is not a Commander product and most of these cards would be useless in that format.

Your better off buying Commander decks to get into that format. This is a good set for those just looking to get into magic to learn the basic concepts.

This would probably be a good start just to learn the game, maybe figure out what colors you prefer. I think most people eventually buy a preconstructed commander deck and then modify it as they get more cards.

Agreed, you have to get the basics down first before jumping into Commander. Commander not allowing duplicates makes you really understand all your cards and requires flexibility.

This beginner box will teach how the game is played. From there I recommend jumping into Arena which is the digital version. That will give you exposure to way more cards and a wide pool of opponents.

Then try tweaking the stock Arena decks with cards you unlock through play. And finally try out Brawl in Arena which is a simpler version of Commander. Then you'll know if Commander is right for you.

This is 2 guided decks and 8 jumpstart decks. As others have said it's a fixed product box. It's fantastic for beginners and even if you don't get more packs it's a nice self contained board game style set.

My kids love Avatar but have no interest in Magic... Would this set keep them happy to play against each other for a while?

Edit: To put it another way, they probably have no interest in Magic outside of this Avatar themed set. Are there boosters available to expand this product while keeping the Avatar theme intact?

You don't really want to start with Commander. You'll need at least a basic understanding of the game before you do that. I strongly suggest the tutorials in MTG Arena, which you can play on mobile or via Steam.
And no, these cards are not for Commander.

Depends on which reprint you get. The thing is, they're reprints of $20+ cards but a lot of them are not going for that much themselves (as pre release prices settle down), mostly because they're really ugly screen grabs.
