This beginner box is a self-contained way to learn Magic, with two guided decks and eight Jumpstart decks that teach the basics in a board game style format. It is especially useful for new players figuring out colors and whether they want to move on to Commander later. The box is not a Commander product, and the decks are not substantial enough for real multiplayer, so four players would be better off splitting into two one on one games. The contents are fixed and identical across boxes, so extra copies do not add anything new.

  • The cards are positioned as a non-Commander starting point that helps learn core Magic concepts first.

  • The learning path suggested includes using MTG Arena tutorials first, then tweaking stock decks and trying Brawl.

  • The beginner box packages two guided decks and eight Jumpstart decks for a self-contained learning experience.

  • The fixed contents can still work like a board-game style set even without buying additional booster packs.

  • The set is not designed for Commander play, and most included cards would be ineffective in that format.

  • The box contents are identical across purchases, so buying multiple boxes does not add new cards.

  • The value can be unclear because some rares reportedly list for $20+ on TCGPlayer while the box price is $22.99.

  • The decks may not be substantial enough for multiplayer sessions, with four players likely needing two 1v1 games instead.

My kids love Avatar but have no interest in Magic... Would this set keep them happy to play against each other for a while?

Edit: To put it another way, they probably have no interest in Magic outside of this Avatar themed set. Are there boosters available to expand this product while keeping the Avatar theme intact?
Hi, the game itself is fun, but no way to know whether or not your kids would enjoy it. There are lots of Avatar boosters available for purchase, so grabbing additional cards for the set won't be a problem.

If this has 8 half decks do you essentially build out 4 full decks from this box? So 4 people can play.

Correct. Tho if you actually had 4 people, you'd want to do two games of 1v1. These decks aren't really substantial enough for multiplayer, but I guess you could try.

Thanks, your answer helps. I meant to say enough for 4 people to build a full deck. I didn't know you could do multi-player. Always thought magic was 1v1

There are a few multiplayer formats, most famously Commander (4 player, 100 card singleton decks), but if you're just playing "kitchen table" Magic (casual), nobody is going to stop you from playing a 4 player game with regular decks. But yes, 1v1 is the norm.
