Why are vertuo pods more expensive that regular nespresso pods?

It's a combination of them being metal, rather than plastic. And they are a proprietary construction, so they are selling them for more. Really wishing I didn't go down the vertuo road personally

For a few reasons. First, many of them are larger and can produce larger cups of coffee vs the original line. Second, they are "newer" tech (pods have barcodes that the machines read to determine conditions of brew). Lastly, they no longer have the patent on the original line, meaning any company can make their own pods, much like Keurig. As a result, Nespresso created the Vertuo line so they can own the patent on a new line of pods and control the pricing.

Main reason is it's proprietary nespresso technology so there's no competition. It's also a bigger pod with additional tech (Centrifusion) which is how they get the nice faux crema from a pod.

Thanks OP! Great deal on the Starbucks 120 pods original line (which are made by Nespresso). However, the vertuo line prices are out of control in the US. For comparison, Costa Rica listed here are $44 for 60 pods in Europe vs. $83.99 listed here. Even with 20% off, it feels like a rip off.

FWIW, I just bought a few stainless steel products from Aliexpress- one converts the Original pods to Vertuo size and the other lets you refill with your own ground coffee which brings down the costs. Heard good things about them but let's see how they perform!

For the same reason vertuo exists. The patent for the original Nespresso pods expired so everyone was making them and they couldn't control the price anymore. Other companies selling pods for .50 when Nespresso was trying to get triple. So they came out with the vertuo and claimed it's better. The real reason is because they have the patent and control the price of the pods since they are the only ones that can make them other than Starbucks which they've given a temp license to.

When the vertuo patent expires, you can bet they'll have another new and improved version.

We've had both the original and the vertuo. There's no difference other than the vertuo has metal pods which is arguably healthier because no micro plastics.
