The federal Residential Clean Energy Credit is set to expire for any expenditures made after December 31, 2025. This means that the property must be installed and placed in service by this deadline to qualify for the credit.
The credit, originally part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 and scheduled to last through 2034, was accelerated to terminate at the end of 2025 with the signing of the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" on July 4, 2025.
Key Details
Credit Amount: The credit is for 30% of the cost of new, qualified clean energy property for your home.
Eligible Improvements: Qualifying expenses include those for solar panels, solar water heaters, small wind turbines, geothermal heat pumps, and battery storage technology (capacity of 3 kWh or greater).
Limits: There is no annual or lifetime dollar limit on the credit amount for most qualifying property, but it is nonrefundable. Any excess credit can generally be carried forward to reduce tax in future years, provided the credit is still in effect.
How to Claim: To claim the credit, you must file IRS Form 5695 with your federal tax return for the tax year in which the property is installed and placed in service.
Homeowners considering these upgrades should act quickly to ensure installation is completed before the deadline. For more information on eligibility and to find other potential state or local incentives, you can consult a tax professional or use resources like the DSIRE database.
If you need it for power outages, get gas if longer than 6 hours of peak power consumption needed.
If you are doing TOU augmenting, this only works out math wise if you are spending like $600+ a year on peak usage and year that you can 0 out else repayment time isn't worth it as battery prices will continue to decrease over time and a dollar today is worth way more than a dollar 5 years from now.
If you have solar, this could extend you based on power usage after peak sun...but we found the math just doesn't work, repayment period for us is over 10 years based on night usage and our off peak is 0.08/kw.
So model it out based on your usage to see if it makes sense under 5 year repay.
It DOES NOT need to be installed by a contractor!!!
You should not need a permit to install a portable generator!
Depending on your area/location, You may need a permit for roof mounted panels.
Simply add a transfer switch or interlock kit and a generator inlet box.
It just needs to produce energy to offset your electric bill, if you're worried about IRS sending a pencil pusher to look at your electrical system.
Basically get a cheap/used solar panel and connect it to the DPU, then plug a few items into the DPU and you are good, until your final install.
EcoFlow Delta Pro Ultra is being framed as a serious whole home backup and peak rate battery system, with enough capacity to keep a house running for a while and strong value at this price. The trolley is included, though it only carries one 6 kWh battery, not the full 12 kWh setup. The federal 30 percent clean energy credit appears to apply to the battery and installation costs if the system is installed and placed in service by December 31, 2025. The main uncertainty is the offer language around installation and eligibility, which is still unclear. It looks most compelling for outage backup or high time of use rates, especially where electricity is expensive.
households with high TOU/peak electricity costs who want to model payback based on peak usage because commenters say it only works out math-wise if you're spending like $600+ per year on peak usage (and they cite SoCal TOU as ~63 cents/kWh).
homeowners planning for backup power during outages (lights/fridges/freezers/sump pump downtime) because commenters say they already use smaller EcoFlow units for those scenarios and a larger 12 kWh system could run their house for a while.
people trying to maximize the federal Residential Clean Energy Credit before it expires because commenters note battery storage (3 kWh+) is eligible and the property must be installed and placed in service by 12/31/2025 to qualify.
buyers who already have an electrician-led generator interlock/inlet setup for short outages because one commenter describes installing an inlet plug, adding an interlock switch, and wiring inside/outside back-to-back inlets so they can plug an LP generator into the panel when the DPU runs out.
buyers who want a whole-home scale connection and prefer fewer components because one commenter says the DPUX can do 12 kW so you only need one for a 50A connection to the house instead of needing a hub.
buyers who need clear, documented installation requirements for the offer because commenters say the installation part is a big unknown and that the deal is vague with no clarification on key terms like installation/requirements.
people counting on the federal tax credit but who are unsure how "mobile unit" status affects eligibility because commenters question whether it qualifies since it's considered a mobile unit and they're unsure whether it must be installed and/or placed in service.
buyers who don't want the ongoing hassle of generator fuel storage and maintenance for outage backup because one commenter says the downside for them is keeping non-ETOH gasoline and running the generator monthly, and they wouldn't pay this price for that hassle.
buyers who want to rely on the deal page details without verifying included accessories because commenters note the deal page doesn't mention the trolley (and they saw a discrepancy between the pictured trolley and what they believe is included).
buyers who are expecting the full 12 kWh capacity to be included in the trolley setup because one commenter clarifies the trolley carries only one 6 kWh battery (not the full 12 kWh), even though they still call it a good deal.
The unit may be treated as a mobile unit, which raises questions about whether it must be installed versus placed in service for the federal tax credit.
Battery storage of 3 kWh or greater can qualify for the federal Residential Clean Energy Credit if it is installed and placed in service by December 31, 2025. Installation costs can also qualify, but the paperwork should show completion by the deadline.
A 12 kWh system can run a house for a while, while smaller EcoFlow units are better suited to keeping lights, fridges, freezers, and sump pumps running. For short outages, some shoppers still prefer a gas generator or interlock setup because it can be cheaper.
The listing appears to include the trolley when the page is fully expanded, but the deal text itself does not clearly mention it. The pictured trolley may differ from the 4-wheel tray the unit sits on, so the exact accessory should be verified on the product page.
A common setup uses an exterior inlet, an interior inlet, and an interlock switch at the breaker panel. One cord runs from the generator outside to the outside inlet, then another cord connects the inside inlet to the DPU input, allowing the house panel to be powered or recharged.
It can make sense only when peak-rate spending is high enough to justify the payback, with one example citing about $600+ per year in peak usage and a payback period over 10 years otherwise. In Southern California, 63 cents/kWh TOU rates were cited as making the math more favorable.
These are becoming extremely attractive. I would jump on this except for the fact that we are looking at an international move somewhat soon. After that, I will get one. We have a bunch of the smaller ones for lights, fridges, freezers, sump pumps for when we lose power. Something this size would run our house for a while.

The installation part is a big unknown. No clear language towards it.
Does this unit qualify for the federal tax credit? The reason I ask is because Federal tax credit mentioned that it needs to be installed. This unit is considered a mobile unit and no installation is required. It either needs to be installed OR put into use or installed AND put into use?

we got our 2024 30% tax rebate for a dpu w/1 battery (home depot one day $2899 sale), a delta 2 and a double voltage hub. this year we got another dpu battery (another home depot one day sale). then we had an electrician install an inlet plug next to the breaker box, then put an interlock switch in our panel, and then an inside/outside back to back inlet, to allow us to plug an lp generator (sitting outside) into our panel. that's if the dpu runs out & we can't recharge the dpu, due to not being able to have solar panels. we'll claim the 30% tax rebate on those expenses this year.

Are you able to charge the DPU from the generator?

I agree - a while back I read it had to be installed by a contractor. (permits, invoices etc.)
I had an extensive 'chat' w/AIs about this - what 'it' said was it comes down to a check-list showing it's configured & running - this is simply incase of an audit.
