The federal Residential Clean Energy Credit is set to expire for any expenditures made after December 31, 2025. This means that the property must be installed and placed in service by this deadline to qualify for the credit.
The credit, originally part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 and scheduled to last through 2034, was accelerated to terminate at the end of 2025 with the signing of the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" on July 4, 2025.
Key Details
Credit Amount: The credit is for 30% of the cost of new, qualified clean energy property for your home.
Eligible Improvements: Qualifying expenses include those for solar panels, solar water heaters, small wind turbines, geothermal heat pumps, and battery storage technology (capacity of 3 kWh or greater).
Limits: There is no annual or lifetime dollar limit on the credit amount for most qualifying property, but it is nonrefundable. Any excess credit can generally be carried forward to reduce tax in future years, provided the credit is still in effect.
How to Claim: To claim the credit, you must file IRS Form 5695 with your federal tax return for the tax year in which the property is installed and placed in service.
Homeowners considering these upgrades should act quickly to ensure installation is completed before the deadline. For more information on eligibility and to find other potential state or local incentives, you can consult a tax professional or use resources like the DSIRE database.

It DOES NOT need to be installed by a contractor!!!
You should not need a permit to install a portable generator!
Depending on your area/location, You may need a permit for roof mounted panels.
Simply add a transfer switch or interlock kit and a generator inlet box.
It just needs to produce energy to offset your electric bill, if you're worried about IRS sending a pencil pusher to look at your electrical system.
Basically get a cheap/used solar panel and connect it to the DPU, then plug a few items into the DPU and you are good, until your final install.

If you need it for power outages, get gas if longer than 6 hours of peak power consumption needed.

If you are doing TOU augmenting, this only works out math wise if you are spending like $600+ a year on peak usage and year that you can 0 out else repayment time isn't worth it as battery prices will continue to decrease over time and a dollar today is worth way more than a dollar 5 years from now.

If you have solar, this could extend you based on power usage after peak sun...but we found the math just doesn't work, repayment period for us is over 10 years based on night usage and our off peak is 0.08/kw.

So model it out based on your usage to see if it makes sense under 5 year repay.

The trolley only carries one battery (6kWh), but this is still a great deal.

These are becoming extremely attractive. I would jump on this except for the fact that we are looking at an international move somewhat soon. After that, I will get one. We have a bunch of the smaller ones for lights, fridges, freezers, sump pumps for when we lose power. Something this size would run our house for a while.

Where are you taking this thing with a trolley? There are plenty of other options for portable battery systems even from Ecoflow.

The installation part is a big unknown. No clear language towards it.

Does this unit qualify for the federal tax credit? The reason I ask is because Federal tax credit mentioned that it needs to be installed. This unit is considered a mobile unit and no installation is required. It either needs to be installed OR put into use or installed AND put into use?

we got our 2024 30% tax rebate for a dpu w/1 battery (home depot one day $2899 sale), a delta 2 and a double voltage hub. this year we got another dpu battery (another home depot one day sale). then we had an electrician install an inlet plug next to the breaker box, then put an interlock switch in our panel, and then an inside/outside back to back inlet, to allow us to plug an lp generator (sitting outside) into our panel. that's if the dpu runs out & we can't recharge the dpu, due to not being able to have solar panels. we'll claim the 30% tax rebate on those expenses this year.

Are you able to charge the DPU from the generator?

I agree - a while back I read it had to be installed by a contractor. (permits, invoices etc.)

I had an extensive 'chat' w/AIs about this - what 'it' said was it comes down to a check-list showing it's configured & running - this is simply incase of an audit.

I jumped on the 18kwh deal and haven't had an electrician install them yet, but perhaps this is what you need?
