Garmin Dash Cam Mini 3 is a tiny, plug and play 1080p dash cam that stands out for its compact size and easy setup. The Garmin app, automatic recording, microSD support, voice save, and crash or hard brake clip saving make it practical for everyday incident documentation, and the hardware has a reputation for surviving hot summers and years of use. The main drawbacks are the lack of GPS and the limits of 1080p, especially for reading plates at night or far away. Adhesive mounting can also be awkward to remove, and rental car use may require extra adapters or a different mount. It is a simple, space saving option if those tradeoffs are acceptable.

  • rental-car drivers who can use the cigarette lighter/USB-A power setup because commenters suggest it can be a good option for rental cars, with the main caveat being the mount style and power connection.

  • people who want a compact dash cam for everyday incident documentation because commenters like the Mini 3's size and quality and say it's more than enough details to stop "ambulance chasers," even if it can't read plates from very far away through glare.

  • drivers who want a plug-and-play setup because one commenter says it's literally plug and play, unlike other dash cams that require poking wires and can be tricky or even cause shorts.

  • owners who care about reliable long-term recording because a commenter reports their older Garmin dash cam has worked for 3+ years with only a few freezes that auto-restart and keep recording, likely tied to a failing memory card.

  • people who want GPS features for speed tracking and accident-fault disputes because commenters note dash cams use GPS to track and display speed and that it's helpful for proving you're not at fault.

  • renters who can't use adhesive mounting because commenters warn the Mini 3 appears to use an adhesive mount and that adhesive was extremely hard to remove after use, plus another commenter says adhesive mounting was unreliable and they switched to a suction cup.

  • people who need strong low-light license plate capture because commenters say the Mini 3 lacks a Sony Starvis sensor, so it may struggle to read plates at night or in other low-light situations.

  • drivers who want GPS on the dash cam because this model has no GPS, and one commenter questions whether GPS is important for a dash cam.

  • people who don't want to deal with power/installation hassles because commenters say powering a dash cam can be a nightmare or require professional installation that could cost more than the unit.

  • rental-car drivers whose car only has USB-C ports because one commenter found the Mini 3 is powered by the cigarette lighter/USB-A and their rental car only had USB-C, requiring a USB-C to USB-A adapter.

  • people who rely on GPS for exact time/location in disputes because commenters caution GPS accuracy isn't perfect and automatic date/time/location could be wrong compared to a phone/camera, potentially affecting where an accident is said to have occurred.

Anyone have one? Opinions?
The main thing this is missing is a Sony Starvis sensor. It's not going to be able to read license plates at night or in other low light situations. If that's important to you, I'd pass on this.

I wish cars would come with power in place for these. Interested but powering one of these things figures to be a nightmare (or a huge bill to a pro that dwarfs the cost of the unit itself)

If your car's rear view mirror has dimming capability, most likely it has power. You can tap that port using an adapter. I have these for mine and it's worked well. Make sure you find the right one for your car.

Why would that be important? You just want video footage, you can tell from that where you were.
Dashcams use GPS to track and display speed, which can be very helpful in many different ways to prove you're not at fault in an accident. It's a pretty standard feature and one always recommended by reviewers.

Or if you want to make things very easy (and a bit pricier), grab a Dongar adapter that requires no wiring (again make sure you get the right one).

Vehicle wiring may seem intimidating but It's pretty simple if you can follow some directions or watch a YouTube video. Some cars you can even just tap into the mirror power wire with a wire tap and you're good to go.

This has no GPS. Isn't that pretty important for a dash-cam?
I had a Garmin but it eventually stopped recording. I don't have the best luck with dash cams. I'm about to start using old cell phones..and dash Cam apps..

Correct - I used the adhesive that came with my Garmin dash cam and when I traded in that car; I remembered it was extremely hard to get it off.
Yeah I'll never buy anything with the adhesive again for that reason. I bought a 3rd party, larger suction cup to mount my dashcam. Sure, it falls off once or twice a year...but i clean the spot where it was mounted, put it right back up and I'm good for a while

I have the mini 2. It is one of the best purchases ive ever made. It can take a micro SD card. The cam will automatically delete old footage to make room for new videos. It has a hands free mode which you say " ok garmin, save video" the camera will save the last 15 seconds and the next 15 seconds. Saved videos will stay on the garmin app for 24 hours where you can download the video to your phones photos. It also has crash and hard brake detection and will automatically save the last 15 seconds and next 15 seconds. I caught an accident on the dash cam and gave the video to the police who wrote report. You dont need to turn the camera on each time you drive it automatically cuts on and starts recording when car starts and the camera gets power from ciggerette lighter port. Anyone who is looking for a solid dashcam this is a great choice.

Garmin doesn't disclose what sensors they use but the 1080p sensor in this unit is pretty poor per several reviews on DashCamTalk; notable green tint and internal CPL can't be rotated to fully cut out reflections off the windshield.

Being said, I'm in for one. I have a Vantrue E1 Pro with a Sony Starvis IMX 668(?) but despise the app. Probably better at picking up license plates but I imagine for he majority of accidents just the video at whatever quality is more valuable.

My guess is the Mini 4 is likely coming in the next few months hence these large cuts. Have to imagine they're upgrading the sensor from the likely decade old one that's in there now.

I would recommend this as I use this and it's the best thing ever. Literally plug and play. The other one where you have to poke the wires in can sometimes be tricky and it can also cause a short if it's not done properly

Problem is GPS is not 100% accurate. Vehicle speed can be determined by video as well.
The primary reason is automatic date and time information. Location while not important it could help if someone says you were at the accident but the GPS on your phone and camera says you were somewhere else.

I have the previous model, and it's utter garbage. You can only download videos to your phone using wifi, not a cell phone. You can't even transfer videos from to your computer from your SD card due Garmin's formating. I have to spend over 20 minutes in my driveway on my home wifi to get one clip to download on my phone.

Bought the Garmin Mini 3 and a Garmin suction cup last week, excited to use it in a rental car. Only to find that the Mini 3 is powered by the cigarette lighter (or USB-A) and my rental car only offers USB-C ports throughout!

So, best to also purchase some USB-C (male) to USB-A (female) adapter should your (rental) car not have a cigarette lighter nor USB-A ports.

The original mini was my first dash cam that just worked in any weather, after a few chinese brands that failed, but it was almost useless 1080. I won't go back to this overpriced brand and 1080.
