I am a lifelong TMNT fan. Unlike most current adult fans, I never stopped liking turtles. I have a huge collection of vintage stuff, most of which I collected during the dark years of '98-2002, and certainly before 2012, when it suddenly became cool again to like the turtles. I bought the original arcade game back in '98, and I still have it (and it still works!). Anyway, all of this is to say that I'm a big TMNT fan and I've been a gamer for basically my entire life.
Shredder's Revenge is a solid side-scrolling beat 'em up, in the style of Streets of Rage and other games of that genre. The moves available are definitely more varied than what we had in the old SNES and arcade days, though I found that you can still button mash your way through the game. Still, it's the same formula, which gets old pretty fast. It's possible to beat the game in just a few hours, and once I did, I never had any desire to go back to it. In that sense, I am glad I was able to play it on Gamepass (as opposed to having bought it). I know some people also love the soundtrack, but I did not care for most of the tracks (I found some annoying) and felt they didn't really compare to games like River City Girls.
I think the other thing that sort of bothered me was how many random characters were thrown into the game at every turn. It's clear that the developers knew that they could stoke the flames of nostalgia by just tossing as many familiar characters in as they could, even if there was no rhyme or reason to who they were or where they fit in the context of the "story." Some of them were cool to see, but it feels like someone dumped out a box of their old toys and resolved to cram as many of them into the game as possible. Maybe that works for some players, but for my brother and me it felt silly. The cynic in me thinks that they were working with NECA, given how many of these same characters have been released as deluxe $30-$50 "toys" over the last few years.
Anyway, tldr: it's a simple, fun game, but it's not revolutionary, for me it's not the definitive TMNT game, and in the end it's just another of many side scrolling beat 'em ups.
