TP Link Tapo mini smart plugs are a compact way to add energy monitoring, scheduling, and Alexa control to lamps, holiday lights, outdoor lights, heaters, and other 15 amp, 1800 watt devices. The schedules can keep running even if the home network or Alexa is down, and the plugs also work with the Tapo app and newer Sense energy monitoring support. The night light can be disabled or dimmed, and the small size fits tight spots behind furniture. The main caveat is that all outlets are front facing, so they do not solve side outlet clearance needs, and Matter support is not included.
Common Questions (6)
The Matter version adds platform-agnostic compatibility and easier setup with hubs like Google, Alexa, or HomeAssistant, plus a QR-code pairing flow. This non-Matter deal is still solid if you do not need that compatibility, and it is cheaper here because the Prime Card bonus does not apply to the Matter pack.
Yes, these are energy-monitoring plugs and they support up to 15A, or 1800W. That makes them suitable for many lamps, lights, and other household devices, but not for loads above that rating.
No. The plugs in this deal are front-facing only, so they do not solve the side-outlet clearance problem behind furniture. They are still useful in tight spaces where a normal plug would not fit, and one setup worked behind a couch without issue.
Kasa devices can appear in the Tapo app when you use the same account, but Tapo devices do not show up in the Kasa app. New Kasa devices also need to be added in the Kasa app first before they appear in Tapo.
Yes. The night light can be disabled entirely or dimmed to barely noticeable, which makes it usable in bedrooms for light sleepers.
Yes, schedules can still run even if Alexa or the home Wi‑Fi/router is down. They also integrate with Alexa for voice control when the network is available.

My use case around the house - voice activated or scheduled:
I have both apps on my phone.
Also, am I right in understanding that Tapo requires internet to operate on schedule, while Kasa does not? Or is that just in regards to initial setup?
I only have Kasa plugs and no Tapo products...I need a couple more plugs. Trying to decide if I should get the 4-pack of Kasa for $24 or Tapo for $23. They're both eligible for the 25% cash back, so they're effectively the same price. Tapo plugs look they might be smaller, and that's really the only reason I'm considering them. I guess they're the "newer" line of TP-Link plugs, though unless you're going with Matter-enabled units (which neither of these are), I don't think that matters.

Sorry to reply so late. Your Kasa devices will show up in the Tapo app, but from what I can tell you can't add a new Kasa device in Tapo app. When I click on the setup device option, it only shows Tapo models. So I have to add the device to the Kasa app and then it automatically shows up in the Tapo app.
I don't know the answer to the question about the internet. There is a r/TPLinkKasa sub and a r/Tapo/ (monitored by TPLink) on Reddit. They would be more knowledgeable.
